NEIL HARRIS:

A lot brighter in training this week?

“It’s always bright when I’m in charge. I like them to be upbeat and enjoyable. After three points and a dominant performance, of course everyone is on a high in the training ground, added zip in the players. Another good week.”

Have you set Moore a goal target?

“No I don’t do that.

“I don’t need to set them targets for them to deliver. Players want to do well. Goalkeepers, defenders or strikers.

“Players will be judged individually, from afar, but for me it’s not just about delivering individually, being pleasing on the eye, it’s about the team winning, what you do away from the ball as well.

“I expect that from all my players.”

Taking on a team who started really well…

“Goes to show only three teams have full points from two games.

“Decent front four, pose a real goal threat and have some experience at centre half.

“We know it will be a good test but we are a team with real confidence and have threats as well.”

Responding to criticism

“Yes it’s the reaction we wanted. It doesn’t mean we have cracked it and we will just turn up and win. We had to work hard on Saturday to get the three points.

“This week we have to play very well to get the points, be very solid defensively against a very good front four and have goalscoring opportunities, whether that’s through football or direct plays.”

NEIL HARRIS:

Joe Bennett injury latest

“Hopefully Joe is OK. He came off with a calf strain, so we will have to see how we go.

“If not, then Greg Cunningham and Joel Bagan are desperate to be involved.

“Great experience (Greg), good, solid, reliable lad. Been out a long time and really had to graft to get fit.

“It’s nice to see when players come back from recoveries.

“And Joel Bagan has impressed with the first team.”

Supporters back into the stadium, setback/worry?

“If I’m being honest, it’s a major concern for the EFL and non-league.

“I fully understand we are in difficult times, unprecedented times and how dangerous the pandemic is in society and that leans into the sporting world as well.

“We are not immune to that in the sporting world, we saw this week the Leyton Orient-Spurs game and then the incidents with the two lads and David Moyes at West Ham. We hope everyone in connection with those clubs are OK.

“It goes to show the dangers that are there, people coming back into stadiums and being in close quarters.

“The knock-on effect, financially, is huge, absolutely massive. Premier League might not feel the hit because of just the TV revenues.

“The Championship will, football clubs are fortunate enough to have wealthy owners, but owners’ pockets only run so deep when they are running other businesses.

“Below that, Leagues One and Two, a lot of the clubs really rely on match-day revenues, social networks within the bar areas and facilities. All that is gone.

“I, for one, don’t see fans back in before Christmas, that’s for sure. Are we going to get them back this season? Until we find a vaccine it is going to be very difficult.

“I don’t want to scaremonger, I have had no information on that, it’s only my opinion. I think it could lead into next year and so on.

“How are we going to return to normal in the world without a vaccine for Covid? We have to hope the scientists work and get the breakthrough and go month by month.

“In the footballing world, it’s certainly not going to be this side of New Year that’s for sure.”

Still test every week?

“We tested before Sheffield Wednesday and were 100 percent fine, it now becomes about whether there are symptoms.

“If there are issues we deal with them immediately.

“Will that change now? I don’t know. I know players are being extremely careful.

“We have temperature checks and questionnaires every day.”

NEIL HARRIS:

Welcome EFL testing every week?

“If we were to be tested there has to be clarity from the top.

“I don’t want to speak too much about the EFL but we need some direction from the governing body.

“I don’t want to see too much on testing but you want leadership.

“We are just following protocols.

“We were told after the first game we didn’t need to be tested on a weekly basis unless there are good reasons for it.

“We have no issues with temperatures and have no symptoms.

“Who pays for it? It’s very expensive. Leagues One and Two, do chairmen pay for it? I can’t see that.

“We would pay for it at Cardiff City, no disrespect to Leagues One and Two, paying £4,000 to £8,000 a week on testing…”

NEIL HARRIS:

Reading haven’t conceded a goal yet…

“If you can win two or three games in a row it shoots you up the division, the same as losing three or four, that’s where consistency becomes key.

“Consistency over a period of time is vital. We didn’t have it in our first game, second game we were very good.
Every team has good players, it’s about how you deal with their strengths and exploit their weaknesses.”

NEIL HARRIS:

Lots of goals and away wins, why?

“Start of the season you have a tendency to see a string of 0-0 draws.

“A lot of goals, is that teams being more attack-minded? Possibly. Coincidence? It could be.

“We just look at ourselves and what I want to see in my team, being competitive and creating chances.”

NEIL HARRIS:

You used to be about scoring goals when playing, what’s happened?

“Football management! Understanding both ends of the pitch.

“Nothing better as a football manager than getting a clean sheet. To be successful you have got to be good at both ends of the pitch.

“You have got to stop shots in the box and at the other end you’ve got to have individual brilliance to score goals.

“And you have to be good at set plays in both boxes.”

NEIL HARRIS:

Tomlin, important to play under-23s?

“Yeah, I am really, really pleased. Last week I was a bit down, not with Lee, but because he came on against Sheffield Wednesday and had a tough few days physically.

“Then on the back of Forest last week, he felt great, played 70 minutes on Monday (for the U23s), which was really important and has been in today, looking good.

“We are hoping he is on an upward trend of getting on to the training pitch more and more.

“We are not rushing him, that’s key, but getting us much out of him as we can.”

NEIL HARRIS:

Tom Sang on loan, situation with Mark Harris?

“Sparky will be staying with us, definitely until at least January. Him and Tom have done brilliantly, and Joel Bagan as well.

“Even younger lads like Kieron Evans, he dropped back into the U23s and scored the other day.

“George Ratcliffe is in with the first team training every day.

“Tom we felt has done really well with us, had quite a lot of interest in him to go out and we decided that between now and January, will he get enough first-team football and will that counteract him getting 10 or 15 games in League Two?

“Tom has not had a loan for a long time so we thought him going out to play some men’s football would benefit him.

“We can study him while he is away and might make him more rounded by January.

“Mark has had a couple of loans and done well in short bursts. But at the moment it’s nice to have him in and around the building and he gives us something different, playing off the shoulder.

“I am also aware he has been away with Wales, will go away next month, November as well, it might do him good to stay with us and learn from me.”

Re: NEIL HARRIS:

NEIL HARRIS:

Are you closer to any new signings?

“Uh, no.

“I don’t mean to be short or funny with it. We are in the sense of information, hunting. I’ve been speaking to agents, clubs, seeing who is available.

“We will not be signing anyone before the weekend that’s for sure.

“From my perspective we could do with adding to the group, I always want options.

“I want different types of wingers, centre forwards, No.10s.

“I just feel maybe we could add to those options and it could benefit us.”

Re: BREAKING NEIL HARRIS:

You were a striker, how much confidence will Kieffer have from last weekend?

NEIL HARRIS:

“It’s massive. When you want to go somewhere so much, when you’ve got a price tag on your shoulders, whether it’s a few million or 50 quid, there is added pressure.

“You want to impress your fan base, of course, but your team-mates as well.

“It’s nice for the team to see Kieffer off the mark and it will be nice to see the other lads get off the mark.

“It takes the shackles off, which is vitally important.”

Re: BREAKING NEIL HARRIS:

Thu Sep 24, 2020 2:57 pm

Just a big striker, doesn’t do justice to his whole game. Seen more in him since he’s joined?

NEIL HARRIS:

“I see it every day now.

“I see areas I can work with him and areas I can improve him.

“I really noticed his qualities when he came into the national team and produced some very good football from the chest down.

“That’s what’s caught the eye with the staff, the link-up play and the tidiness.

“He has massively improved over the last few years on his first contacts.

“But most importantly from direct play, goal kicks and free-kicks, where he has developed his game.

“His all-round game has impressed all of us but he has very good players to compete with.”

Drive to keep the Wales No.9 shirt, is that is in his thoughts?

NEIL HARRIS:

“Yeah, massively. Good form for us benefits us, Cardiff City, and it benefits the Welsh national side. They have important fixtures coming up.

“We want him to do well and keep his place in the national team.”

Cardiff City boss Neil Harris posts positive injury update ahead of Reading clash as Lee Tomlin continues comeback -

Thursday 24th September 2020

Cardiff City manager Neil Harris says he's 'really pleased' with Lee Tomlin's recent progress as the playmaker bids to return to full fitness.

Tomlin came off the bench against Nottingham Forest for his second cameo in as many games last weekend, but is yet to start a league game this season as he works his way back from injury.

The 31-year old played 70 minutes for the under-23s in their recent defeat to Bristol City, and Harris has been impressed by his progress.

NEIL HARRIS:

"I am really, really pleased.

Harris is also hoping there will be good news on Josh Murphy and Joe Bennett, both of whom are bidding to overcome their own injury setbacks.

Bennett limped off during the win at the City Ground, while Murphy missed out completely due to a hamstring problem.

“Hopefully Joe is OK," Harris said. "He came off with a calf strain, so we will have to see how we go.

“If not, then Greg Cunningham and Joel Bagan are desperate to be involved.

“Great experience (Greg), good, solid, reliable lad. Been out a long time and really had to graft to get fit.
