Official Statement:

Merthyr Town:

After significant debate and soul searching the Board Members ‪on Wednesday evening, concluded that due to the rise in cases in Wales caused by COVID-19, the current local lockdowns in place in neighbouring Caerphilly CBC and RCT, the fact that Merthyr and Newport are included on the ‘watch list’ of the Welsh Assembly Government, the level of testing that had been taking place in Merthyr last week, plus the Assembly's current restrictions that prevent any fans attending our home games, the Board extremely reluctantly decided to submit a request to the Southern League that our 2020/21 season is 'suspended' with immediate effect.

The initial outcome of the Board meeting was to request additional time to fully consult with our members. However, when we were advised on Thursday that the procedure would prevent this as the season was about to start, we were left with no choice but to start the process which is the last thing the Board wanted to do given the importance of the situation we now find ourselves in.

A shame but I can see where it would make financial sense in these weird times, Annis

Will be good to see them back net year!

Could they have played there home fixtures all away from if you know what I mean not at a venue in South Wales but at there opponents grounds and come to some sort of finicall arrangement .im guessing that all the Merthyr players are not all from Merthyr you do get players who come from other areas so they might not be affected by the virus .all I hope Merthyr can get back playing soon .

Exclusive: Merthyr Town Would Have Been Bankrupt By November Had We Not Mothballed Season, Says Chairman Howard King

Posted on 21st September 2020

Exclusive by Terry Phillips

Chairman Howard King has revealed that Merthyr Town would have gone bust in November had they started the season playing behind closed doors.

The Southern League outfit have taken the decision to suspend playing in the 2021-21 season due to the problems caused by COVID-19.

The decision means the club have had to forfeit tomorrow’s FA Cup home tie with Poole Town.

“If we had tried to start the season we could have been bankrupt by mid-November,” former FIFA referee King told Dai Sport.

“With new Coronavirus restrictions in place we would have had to start playing matches behind closed doors.

“We would have run out of money by mid-November and the club would have gone bust.

“Leaving Southern League football at that stage would have mean we would probably never get back. Then we would have been at the mercy of the Football Association of Wales and possibly facing life in Welsh League Division Two.

“Southern League officials have offered us re-admission to Premier South for 2021-22. They have guaranteed that and we believe this decision is the right way to go.

“We have [directors] taken stick because we did not call a meeting of members, but we had to make the decision to pull out of Southern League football – and I expect other clubs will follow.”

no doubt they looked into playing all games away .. but it would incur doubling their travelling costs. and paying whatever club they pay for putting the game on.. and thats before you start telling players that every game involves travelling..
