Tom Sang set to be loaned to Cheltenham

I don't know whether we should keep him around. We were all excited for youth to start coming through but as of yet not one youth player even in the matchday squad.

Don't get me wrong, he's not proven in the Championship but if we are aiming to start using youth players and Harris is talking about getting someone in to slot into the attacking role.

Sang seems to fit in?

Cardiff City's former Manchester United prospect set for loan move to Cheltenham Town

Sunday 20th September 2020

Cheltenham Town are set to sign versatile Cardiff City prospect Tom Sang on loan.

Cardiff's squad at the moment seems to be getting thinner, so its a bit of a shock as Sang has fitted in well with the first team.

The Liverpool-born 21-year-old can operate in a number of positions, including number 10, defensive midfield and out wide. He can also fill in across the backline.

Sang is regarded as a neat passer and an extremely hard-working player with the right attitude, as well as being a positive influence in the dressing room.

Robins boss Michael Duff is specifically looking for another attacking, creative player to fill the gap left by Ryan Broom, who joined Peterborough United for £150,000 last month.

Finn Azaz has performed well in the role in Cheltenham's early matches, but Duff wants to add at least one more option to take some of the pressure off the 20-year-old West Brom loanee.

Sang began his career at Bolton Wanderers, but moved to Manchester United after a successful trial for the Under-18s in 2015.

He was promoted to first team training ahead of the Champions League group match against Juventus in October 2018.

Sang was loaned to AFC Fylde and then released by United in 2019 afte, signing for Cardiff City after a successful trial.

He made one senior appearance in the FA Cup against Reading last season.

He has also appeared for his parent club in the EFL Cup this term, going on from the bench in the 67th minute at Northampton Town.

He is the son of former professional footballer-turned-agent Neil Sang,

Cheltenham were without forwards Alfie May, Alex Addai and Callum Ebanks for Saturday's 3-0 win at Tranmere Rovers, but Duff is hoping to have May back from illness and injury ahead of next weekend's home match against Grimsby Town.

Teenager Ebanks, who recently agreed a professional deal with the club, is facing several weeks on the sidelines with a knee injury.

A potential loan switch for George Lloyd to Dover Athletic has been put on hold, but could still happen when players return to fitness.

Duff is also keen for out-of-favour Tahvon Campbell to go out for some competitive football.

If there is to be one further signing after Sang, it is likely to be a specialist number 10.

Cheltenham already have three loanees in their squad, with Sang set to join Azaz, fellow goalkeeper Josh Griffiths, also from West Brom, and Hull City midfielder Elliot Bonds.

Interesting as I thought we were going to try and bring through and play some of our youth this season, Our Committees words and Neil Harris words not mine?

So is NH still keen on blooding the youngsters or not?

Thought Sang might have been given a chance soon?

how long is this loan for ?

Sounded like he was the youngest player closest to the first team.
Hopefully some movement this week in the transfer market. We are desperately light at RB and an attacking no 10.

Mmm maybe it’s a case of moving out before moving someone in.

probably exactly the same as all managers who would love some extra quality players for free. but they do actually have to be good enough ..

Maybe we have a player or two coming in? If the player isn't quite ready then it may have been agreed between him and Harris that some game time at Cheltenham will be good.
I tend to try and look at things in a positive way rather than negative

You’re in the minority on this board if you look at things in a positive light! The time to experiment with youngsters is when you have nothing to play for. We haven’t reached that stage yet.

The question is, “ is he better than what we have available?” . If the answer is “No”, then sending him out on loan to gain experience is the sensible thing to do.

Re: ' Another Cardiff player loaned out '

Sun Sep 20, 2020 3:51 pm

I actually think it is a good move. If he is very good for Cheltenham then he may be good enough to play championship football but if he struggles to get in into their team or is just ordinary for them he won't be good enough for the championship. It doesn't say how long the loan is or if we can recall him.

I would take any manager saying he wants to bring youngsters through with a pinch of salt at Cardiff. Did anyone else hear on the commentary of the Forest match that in the last four seasons their youth seat up has produced players sold for £55 million in the last four season. It makes you realise how utterly useless our youth set has been in the last ten season.

not much wrong in sending players out to gain experience { not that i thought going to WSM was } .. but yes there were a raft of statements suggesting some of the youngsters were knocking on the door and Sang got quite a few mentions..

He's not exactly a youth product if ours. He is someone young we signed.
Worst case scenario is he doesn't feature at Cheltenham either then we've not found out anything.

each case/player is different.. Dan James got loaned to Shrewsbury and couldnt get on their bench.. just over a year later Leeds were offering 10 mill...

Agreed. But he was a Swansea product. He'd been through their academy and they decided to loan him out. Surely we aspire to the youngsters breaking in to our first team being our products? Not someone we take from Man Utd, or City, at age 19. That's still not showing our academy working which it isn't.

Swansea signed him from Hull when he was like 17. If we can make a 20mill profit on someone, I dont care where we get him from.

Didnt know that. Apologies. So it is like us signing Sang and him coming good for £20 million. But our academy is still shite and not producing!

Pretty much yea

Swansea also did it with mcburnie. Thats how Brentford operate aswell. I think they scrapped their youth setup completely and put all their effort/finances into scouting players 16/17+ years old. They've made massive profits on players.

Is Vassell still a city player ?

Sending a kid over to Cheltenham is a double edged sword - yes he may get game time, he may also be bought down to that League's level rather than fighting for a place here.

He needs regular first team football to develop which he isn't going to get here. Playing in league 2 is probably far more competitive than playing in the u23's. Most youngsters are sent out to lower leagues to help them make the step up.

Yes, I'm not too worried about this one, seems like a sensible move as long as he gets game time. It's often used as a way of finding put whether these youngsters are going to make it of not. In this instance at 21 he's no longer a prospect he needs to be playing and proving whether he will make it or not.

Cardiff City player Tom Sang is set for a loan move to Cheltenham Town.

By Glen Williams

According to GloucestershireLive, the former Man United academy kid is set to be drafted in to help fill the attacking gap left by Ryan Broom on the back of his move to Peterborough.

Sang is regarded as one of Cardiff's brightest prospects at 21 years old, and came off the bench during City's defeat to Northampton Town in the League Cup at the beginning of the season.

I agree. At 21, by now he should be included in the first team squad on match day more regularly. Either he is good enough and isnt being given a chance or he isn't good enough. Hopefully he can have a good spell at Cheltenham and use it as a platform to progress with us.

I think the reason he did mot play for Shrewsbuy is that his dad died very shortly after the move and he was in no state to play and his loan was terminated.
