Josh Murphy looking sharp

By Glen Williams

Many of us have only managed to see City's warm-up matches in the form of highlights reels, so it's difficult to make too many big assumptions when it comes to analysing the matches so far.

But, on first glance, Josh Murphy is looking sharp and lively.

Of course, City have played against teams in lower divisions over the last few days, but Murphy's talents with the ball at his feet have really shone through.

He did well in fits and starts last season but all City fans, and indeed the players and staff, will be desperate to see him string together a succession of top performances to kick off the campaign.

He has the ability to create, score, cross, beat a man and dribble for days, Cardiff really need him to be doing that on a consistent basis this term.

He has looked confident in these pre-season games, or at least the parts we were able to see, and that certainly bodes well if you are a Bluebirds supporter.

I suppose being a footballer is no different to any job in one way. We all have good days and bad.

I can remember days when I worked so well I thought I was a superstar in my profession and worth double my salary.

However, like everyone else I had days when I would have been more productive being locked in the post room for 8 hours.

That is the only explanation I can think of why Josh Murphy can look every bit a Premiership player but also disappear for a whole game to point that you forget he was out on the pitch.

I honestly don't know the answer to why like Josh I can be so brilliant and useless from time to time. If NH can find the answer to Josh and make him more brilliant than useless that will do for now but I wouldn't mind a PM from NH to help sort myself out!

Playing well against Cheltenham now. Could do with having a bit more strength as he gets pushed off the ball easily but otherwise he’s clearly a class above everyone else in this game. Could be a striker IMO

I'm almost fed up of seeing the guy in a Cardiff shirt. Just feel like he's never really kicked on for us, looked a real prospect playing for Norwich but only the small glimpse of talent here and there with us.

Really want to see him do well here... I think I've just lost all hope with him.

Hes great when hes great, but if hes not playing great hes useless. Pushed off the ball by the wind, doesnt go in for 50/50s.

When hes on form he looks like a winger who will get double digit goals and assits in the championship, then he looks like its his first game in the main team after being in the U17s.

Just need a bit of consistancy from him thats what really defines a player.

Hes a good player,i think Warnock smashed his confidence and the crowd have got on his back.Seems like he makes one mistake and he gets it in the neck,Hoilett on the other hand can make a similar mistake and no one bats an eyelid. He should be given a chance

Getting his confidence back it seems. Good for him as I think he has a fair bit to offer.

Hopefully he'll kick on this season.

Let me guess of another season of "there's definitely a decent footballer in there, he just needs to find his confidence"

thought he had some decent games in the prem and to be fair this season just finished { not that he got credit when he did }.. but i thought he would be gone as Harris didnt seem interested in him at the restart...

Spot on, I was going to say the same, he just didn't fit in with the style Warnock played. Hopefully he'll come into his own this season playing the football that NH wants to play. He is a confidence player just like Whitts was when he first came, his first couple of touches determined how the rest of his game would go.

Agree with a few already posted. Seems to me to be a real confidence player. We’ve all seen how when he beats his man early his tail goes up and he looks like he’ll be unplayable. If he fails in his first dribble or gets an early tough tackle he loses interest. I think Harris’s style of play and also the lack of fans might really help him. I’ve been guilty of getting frustrated at him when he gets pushed off the ball and a few thousand others seem to really knock him. Maybe without fans he’ll feel more free to keep having a go. One thing I do know is this is a make or break year for him with us.

I think there is a lot to that but it’s the strength of character of Hoilett that lets him respond more positively as he gets stick too.

I remember Robbie Fowler was always looking sharp in training!

Last time I saw City live was the pre-season friendly against Real Betis. Within a few minutes Murphy had taken a pass 25 yards out, sowed his marker a clean pair of heels and smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Wow! thought everyone there that day, this lad’s going to be a star. But we all know he hasn’t lived up to that early promise and can only hope NH can instill the confidence in him that he obviously needs. Wouldn’t be at all surprised if Warnock’s style and man management just didn’t suit him

Exactly, Hoilet makes mistakes yes, has quiet games, but his tail never goes between his legs and city fans recognise that. He works his socks off always. The same cannot be said about Murphy.

I hope a few games behind closed doors will help Murphy get some confidence back.Hoilett is a crowd fav,no doubt about it,and was a good player for 2 seasons, and an average one at best since. When was the last time he took on a fullback?Imagine if Murphy had missed that last min pen against Wolves a few years back,it wouldnt have been the "never mind junior" reaction from the crowd. Its funny as a fan base we dont seem to take to players like Murphy,Zaha,Tom Lawrence in recent seasons, but a player like Paterson is also a fav, even tho he has no ability at all.
