A slight formation tweak

By Glenn Williams

When Kieffer Moore signed for Cardiff City, many wondered whether he was brought in to play alongside Robert Glatzel in a 4-4-2.

Last season, of course, Neil Harris adopted a 4-2-3-1 for the most part, with Glatzel, Callum Paterson or Danny Ward filling that sole striker berth.

What we have seen from the two friendly matches so far, however, is that Harris appears to be trialling a 4-4-2 system, with Mark Harris playing alongside Moore in the first match with Newport and Glatzel in the Rovers clash.

With Lee Tomlin a doubt for the start of the season, this could well be a pointer towards Harris' thinking over what formation he could play in the Carabao Cup clash with Northampton this weekend or the league opener against Sheffield Wednesday the week after.

It was Harris' preferred option, for the most part, while manager at Millwall and we might well see that implemented now with City.

Glatzel and Moore have both been excellent so far, both having found the back of the net twice, and the prospect of those two starting up front together is a really exciting one.

Whether that is the case come match-day, however, remains to be seen.

I still think Harris will stick with 4-2-3-1 for league games this season. It would be nice to see our wingers getting wide and swinging in crosses for Moore to get on the end of. I also really want to see Ralls or Vaulks pushing further forward and linking up with Moore on the ground.

I imagine the experimenting with 4-4-2 is when we're chasing a game and need more firepower up front. Either way, it's good to see our strikers getting goals and hopefully building their confidence for the season ahead! :ayatollah:

My football heart will always be in the 70's 80's & 90's where 4-4-2 was the gold standard formation. I would love to go back to the system and we have the players to make it work.

The wingers and overlapping full-back are key to this system as they must provide good quality crosses into the box for the likes of Moore & Glatzel. We last saw this system with Dave Jones 10 years ago and in fairness it was great to watch even if the manager was a bit of ***** at times.

And another today. Wing backs.

I think this is so outdated for modern football Tony.
You just can’t afford two out and out strikers playing next to each other, two wingers staying wide and leaving two central midfield plays being overrun.
