Birmingham City’s interest in Cardiff City man outlined following recent arrival

Football 24/7

30/08/2020

Birmingham City reportedly remain keen on signing Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge after their interest in Charlton Athletic’s Dillon Phillips has cooled.

The Blues signed Andres Prieto from Espanyol earlier this week but you feel Aitor Karanka will likely want to further strengthen that area following some summer departures.

Last season’s first choice Lee Camp has left the club after the expiration of his contract, while Connal Trueman has been sent on loan to League One side AFC Wimbledon.

According to reputable journalist Alan Nixon, Birmingham remain keen on signing Etheridge despite the recent arrival of Prieto as they look to gear up for the 2020/21 season.

It is understood that their interest in Phillips has cooled.

Etheridge has fallen out of favour at Cardiff, with Alex Smithies emerging as first choice under Neil Harris.

Cardiff City remain adamant they want at least £1mill for Etheridge.

The Blues have matched Etheridges current wages with what he is on with the Welsh club, believed to be £25,000 a week, but have only offered £500,000.

The 30-year-old was part of the side that helped the Bluebirds secure promotion to the Premier League a few years ago but made just 16 Championship appearances last term and seems to have fallen down the pecking order.

With just one year left on his current deal at the Championship club, you feel they would be open to letting him leave this summer.

The Verdict

This looks a smart signing to me.

Etheridge is a proven player at Championship level and would bolster Karanka’s options between the sticks, which still look quite light despite Prieto’s arrival.

He’s fallen out of favour at the Bluebirds, so you feel this is a move that would suit the 30-year-old and may not be too expensive for the Blues.

The spanish keeper they have signed has only played 80 games at the age of 26, surely a back up only

Not ideal but we could be forced into a sale like this. We could be paying his wages all season and then he leaves for nothing or we get a small fee and we save around 20k a week. Him going could be difference between 1 or 2 coming in.

I agree. Maybe try and squeeze another payment based on appearances otherwise, take the cash I say and save the (reported) £25k a week an spend a bit on another players wages

For the sake of 500K I wouldn't sell him. Yes we have to pay his wages but if Smithies broke a leg in Week 1 we'd be in trouble.

He is a genuine asset, £3M minimum IMHO.

There is no way we will get £3 million for Etheridge that would only happen if there were several clubs interested in him. If Birmingham are offering to pay £500,000 for him grab there arm off. It would be ridiculous to pay £25,000 per week for a back up keeper when the first choice is better and the third choice is pretty good too. The money could be better spent elsewhere. Outside the premier teams simple can't afford to pay £25,000 a week to reserve players.

I would be amazed if Etheridge is on anywhere near £25k considerably less I would guess

No way should we accept just £500k he is a quality keeper at this level. Just imagine if Smithies got injured would you be confident that Day would be an adequate replacement?? not sure I would

what evidence is there of this 30 year old who spent the majority of his time in lge 2 or on the bench in lge 2 being........ pretty good..

It has to be, Jason

He's a class act and we need to weigh up the actual 'value' of letting him go to a rial club who look like they're putting a decent team together. Whilst I like Smithies, a lengthy injury to him would leaves us genuinely short in the keeper stakes. Day is a decent keeper but I feel not yet at 'first team regular' level

We signed Etheridge from Walsall for free. Can’t imagine we would’ve signed a goalkeeper who had just been released by a League 1 club and offered him big wages. And I could be wrong but I think he only signed a new contract with us once we had been promoted to the prem (before he had his best season) so I can’t imagine they would’ve been increased significantly then either. I’d be very shocked if he was on any more than 15k a week. I’d keep him but would be willing to sell if we had an offer upwards of £2 million

The article says he is believed to be on £25000 a week. Obviously he wasn't on that when we signed him but we gave him a new contract after we had been promoted to the premier after he had had a great season for us. We wanted to hang on to him and twenty five grand in the premier is nothing so it would not surprise me if he is on that. Slightly surprised Birmingham are offering that sort of money as they didn't have a pot to pis sin a while back. I presume they have rich new owners.

They sold a player for £20mill as well. Looks like they are trying to offset his high wages with a low transfer fee.

I do agree,it's a bit of a catch 22,let him go,Smithies picks up an injury early on,and we are left with day,I'm not sure I would place much confidence in him being our number one,and your last sentence speaks volumes Sven, he is 30,and still not ready to be a first team player! Why don't city get in touch with besiktas ,they are in the market for a keeper, loan with an option to buy,but they pay his wages, worth a punt? :old: :bluebird:
