Cardiff-Real Zaragoza 1965 help

Sun Aug 30, 2020 9:16 am

Hi guys;

This is Luis Fando, spanish sport journalist. I'm working on a book about the Real Zaragoza golden years in the sixties, and there's a chapter about the leg Cardiff City played against Zaragoza at the Cup Winners Cup 1965. I want to ask you if someone could help me with this. Any content would be very helpful for me: newspapers, articles, fans who were at the stadium that game against Real Zaragoza, memories, books, ex Cardiff football players who remember that day...

The only thing I have from Cardiff is the Match program, so just let me know if you want to share with me any content.

I appreciate your help

Regards

Luis Fando

Luis, Quote from our local paper, Hats off to the City's Once Magnificos"
Tremendous Magnificent! Let the the trumpets blow and the superlatives flow!
Cardiff City deserve them all for their brilliant fight-back here to hold that great Spanish team Real Zaragoza to a 2-2 draw at the Romareda stadium.
Two goals down inside 12 minutes they hamered their way to a draw which puts them in with a great chance of winning this European Cup Winners Cup quarter-final tie when the second leg is played at Ninian Park, Cardiff, on the night of February 3rd.
They ignored the cries of Gamberros" (teddy boys) from the Spanish fans as they crashed into the tackle to knock the sparkle of the scintillating senors.
City were never overawed by the reputation of the high flying top-class Spanish soccer side who are lying second to Real Madrid in the Spanish tables.
Despite "Gamberros" City were given a wonderful ovation at the end by 30,000 sporting crowd who must have boon thrilled by their Welsh fighting spirit. I was at the second leg We had the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled out for hand ball
(Derek Tapscott) late in the game (which was pretty even) Canario came down the right hand side hit a rather tame shot toward the keeper who bent down to collect the ball, it went through his hands and legs and it was in the net, the keeper was Bob Wilson, our Manager was livid, I don't think he played another game for us after that. Hope that helps a bit.

I was at that game, my main recollection was of the Zaragosa goal keeper grabbing Derek Tapscot, who had gone down injured in there penalty area, by an arm and leg and dragging him off the pitch behind the goal.
The last game Bob Wilson played was in the 1968 European cup winners cup semi-final against SV Hamburg when we lost 2-1. The winner came from a mistake by Wilson letting a shot soon off his body into the net.

Predicted text 'spin' . I was a 13 year-old on the Bob Bank in the picture above, Tapscot was dragged off the pitch behind the goal in the picture at the Grange End of the ground.

It was 2-3 same score as the other heartbreaking match at Wembley :cry:
