REPORT: QPR AND CARDIFF BATTLING CHAMPIONSHIP RIVALS FOR PLAYER PULIS CALLED ‘FANTASTIC’
By Danny Owen

Queens Park Rangers and Cardiff City are among four Championship clubs keen to sign West Bromwich Albion midfielder Sam Field, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Four years ago, two of the most exciting academy graduates in West Brom’s recent history were just starting to strut their stuff in the first-team.

At the time, both Sam Field and Jonathan Leko were expected to go from strength to strength in those white and navy stripes.

So, with a pair of homegrown talents packing their bags and heading out of the door in the very same summer, it is tempting to wonder what might have been.

Leko is set to sign for Midlands rivals Birmingham City in a £1 million deal, according to the Mail, while Field is courting interest from QPR, Cardiff, Huddersfield and Barnsley, not to mention Belgian outfit KV Oostende.

At the age of 22, it is about time Field was playing regular first-team football.

With Romaine Sawyers and Jake Livermore firmly established as Slaven Bilic’s first-choice midfield pairing, the former England U20 international would benefit from cutting ties with the club who handed him his professional debut in 2016.

“Technically, he’s as good and as gifted as any footballer I’ve seen at that age,” former Baggies boss Tony Pulis said three years ago, tipping Field to be a ‘fantastic’ player in the future.

QPR could be the ideal destination, given that Rangers boss Mark Warburton has a fine track record when it comes to helping youngsters realise their potential.

Ilias Chair and Bright Osayi-Samuel shone at Loftus Road last season, while Eberechi Eze has completed a near-£20 million move to Crystal Palace.
