MK Dons secure deal for £1m rated ex-Bolton Wanderers and Cardiff striker

Tuesday 25th August 2020

MK Dons have secured a new deal for ex-Bolton Wanderers and Cardiff City striker Joe Mason, confirming the news on their official club website.

After his contract with MK Dons came to an end earlier this summer, it has been confirmed that striker Joe Mason has completed a return to the League One side.

MK Dons have secured a fresh agreement for Mason, re-committing himself to Russell Martin’s side. He enjoyed a decent first season despite the early ending and injury problems, scoring four goals in 16 appearances.

Upon the announcement of his return, Mason spoke to the club’s official website about his new deal. He said that he is “over the moon” to be staying with the club and will now turn his attention to getting back to his best.

“I’m over the moon,” he said.

“I spoke to Russ quite a lot over the Lockdown and he made it quite clear that he wanted me to stay. It was important that the Club got itself in a safe position first, but now I’m happy it’s done and it’s great to be back.

“Up until last season got cut short, I was really enjoying my time here. For me now it’s about staying injury-free and showing what I can do.”

Mason, who is valued at £1m on Transfermarkt, started out with Plymouth Argyle before earning a move to Cardiff City in 2011. He spent five years with the Bluebirds, spending time out on loan with Bolton Wanderers as well.

Since leaving Cardiff in 2016, Mason has gone on to play for Wolves, Burton Albion, Colorado Rapids, Portsmouth and most recently, MK Dons.

Wish Joe all the very best; never quite made it here but scored a wonderfully memorable goal versus Liverpool in the League Cup Final and made us a more than good profit when he left for the Wolves

Good luck, Joe Mason :ayatollah:

Strange that Joe was a player that I never particularly rated personally. Didn’t seem to have the pace or strength to make a big impact.
That said, he did score some great goals such as in the final v Liverpool and another good one was the 4-1 televised win at Blackburn in our first promotion year.
I certainly do wish the lad all the very best :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

Just a better version of Glatzel without the pressure of the price tag.

Not sure what system suits him best as i though of him as a second striker, not strong enough from a target man or quick enough to be a "on the shoulder" of the the defenders but one hell of a finisher if the ball fell to him in the 18 yard box.

Perhaps at 29 he is physically at his peak and L1 is his level.

We play in a pyramid system that still values physicality as well as technical ability. Mr Glatzel may well come a technically superior second tier but he can't show it, as he doesn't possess the strength to hold off two defenders or the speed to show them a clean pair of heels to give him the time to demonstrate those attributes.

I feel Joe is the same, its all about the system. Play him in the Tomlin/Ralls role in our team and he may score a dozen but that leaves holes in midfield and we end up losing too many. He is like a throw back 1970's/80's player.

Always liked Joe and was surprised that during that 21~23 years old period he never put weight (muscle) on and grew into a championship lone striker type player.

Always will give him a round of applause if we ever play against him, never went missing and tried he just didn't fit and it was great business in the end.

For me Joe fitted the role of a number 9 next to an old school number 10. The only problem was he didn't have the pace to be a great number 9. Made a career since leaving us and I wish him all the best. Didn't we get a few mill for him?

He was a natural goal-scorer and was always finding good positions. Not the quickest or strongest, but then again some of the top strikers were not.. Lineker, Fowler etc. With some decent coaching with us I thought he could have developed into a great striker. Sadly we let him go because at the time we had pretty poor coaching and were always looking for immediate results with players.

Wish him all the best.
