50 Years Ago: 'Crack down on football hooligans' - urges Penarth Magistrate

By Sharon Harris

Monday 24th August 2020

CHAIRMAN of Cardiff City Football Club and Penarth magistrate, Mr Fred Dewey this week came out strongly in favour of stiffer penalties for football hooligans.

Mr Dewey made his comments after Cardiff City supporters were showered with broken glass, and some injured, when their train was stoned after City’s impressive 1;0 victory in their opening game of the season at Leicester last Saturday.

Mr Dewey told the Penarth Times: “I firmly believe that greater deterrents are needed to stop these hooligans before someone is maimed or perhaps even killed by their irresponsibility.

“It seems that they take little or no notice of the fines that have been imposed on them by the courts and I think that the time has come to deal with them far more severely.”

Mr Dewey, who lives at Llandaff Close, Penarth, and sits on the Penarth and Barry Benches was himself on the soccer special with the team’s supporters, when the coaches were bombarded with rocks and stones as they passed through Hinckley, near Leicester.

Denouncing the hooligans responsible for the outrage, Mr Dewey said: “I think that anyone who endangers human life through sheer hooliganism deserves to be birched.

“I don’t understand the mentality of these people.

“I think that longer gaol terms should be imposed, and the birch introduced for hooligans who show no regard whatsoever for other people’s safety or property.”

Last season Cardiff City fans won the award for the best behaved supporters in the entire Football League.

And although there were reports of some minor damage committed by Cardiff City fans inside the train, Mr Dewey said that he saw no Cardiff City fans misbehaving.

AT the last meeting of the Sully Parish Council, it was decided to become a member of the Glamorgan Association of Parish Councils.

After a great deal of deliberation members favoured this move, and it now means in consequences that Sully will become a member of the National Association of Parish Councils.

If I remember rightly, that Leicester win in 1970 was the first game of the season and Toshack scored in the first minute to record what was the first goal of the season in the entire football league. Can any of the older fans on the forum confirm this?

Not quite sure how we got the "best behaved supporters award" the previous season but I don't think we were in the running for it in 70/71. I remember going on quite a few football specials that season to Birmingham (think we took three specials up there) Pompey and Oxford. I was only a kid but what great days they were!!

No it was the season before when John Toshack scored the first goal of the season when he put us in front inside the first minute in our 3-2 away win at Carlisle.

Thanks I remember now.

On a similar theme, was Kenwyn's goal against Blackburn and the our goal against whoever we played-the first season in red - cant remember who scored it or who it was against- first goals of the season? If I remember both were the opening games of the season that were played on a Friday night as they were on Sky.

Yeah I seem to remember that goal was timed at 28 seconds, or is my memory crap.

That was it. Didn't see it myself because I left at half time because i couldn't watch them play in red. Wasn't Kenwyn' s the first goal as well- it was our first match after coming down
