Cardiff City's stance on Wolves' Dion Sanderson amid Sheffield Wednesday interest as Bluebirds close in on signing

The defender impressed on loan with the Bluebirds last term

So, it is expected that a defender will be the next arrival at Cardiff City Stadium, and within the next week, too, but whether that is Sanderson, someone else or both still remains to be seen.

Cardiff City are closing in on signing a right back with Wolves starlet Dion Sanderson still very much in the picture.

It is no secret that the right-back berth is an area of priority for City, given they currently don't have any.

Lee Peltier, Jazz Richards and Cameron Coxe have all left the club in recent months and City are actively looking to repopulate that area of the squad.

Cardiff signed Sanderson on loan back in January and the 20-year-old impressed with his marauding, galloping runs down the right-hand side and his unorthodox, scrambling defence.

He tailed off a little towards the end of the campaign, with Neil Harris subsequently entrusting Leandro Bacuna, a natural midfielder, with the right-back berth.

But Cardiff believe Sanderson has something to offer and a well-placed source at the club has said that the Wolves academy product is still very much part of their thinking, with an incoming right back imminent.

That is not to say, though, that the club are limiting their right-back search only to Sanderson.

The Bluebirds are very interested in bringing in another player, whose identity is as yet unknown, and would be very 'disappointed' if a right back isn't through the door by the end of next week.

It could transpire that right back is Sanderson, it might well be this other defender City are very keen on or it could well be both.

Wolves have told Cardiff they wanted to take a look at Sanderson and assess him in pre-season before making any decisions as to his whereabouts next campaign.

The player has just one year remaining on his deal at Wolves and a host of Premier League clubs were thought to be interested during lockdown.

Reports today have surfaced that the Bluebirds' Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield and Rotherham are all interested in bringing in the youngster.

However, Cardiff's stance is that they have opened themselves up as an option to Wolves and the Premier League club are aware that the Bluebirds would be willing to welcome him back.

So, it is expected that a defender will be the next arrival at Cardiff City Stadium, and within the next week, too, but whether that is Sanderson, someone else or both still remains to be seen.

I cannot see Wolves loaning him out until he extends his contract with them. There is no point going out on a seasons loan when he can leave at the end of the season. If he does not want to extend now they might as well sell him.

We could do a lot worse, also bring in a youngster like Sanderson to learn from him.The only alternative is to play Bacuna who did well at RB or try Paterson whose played for Scotland or convert Whyte?
