‘ Latest on Neil Etheridge ‘

Sat Aug 15, 2020 12:40 pm

Apparently Neil Etheridge had done a deal with a foreign club.

Latest news is Birmingham City have come in with a deal for Neil Etheridge.

Etheridge does not appear to be in Neil Harris future plans.

It was not so long ago Cardiff City wanted £10mill, then it went to £5mill and reports are now it could be virtually nothing.

Unfortunately for Etheridge, since the sacking of Neil Warnock and the appointment of Neil Harris, he found himself relegated to the bench in January and was replaced by Alex Smithies.

How come it's now virtually nothing ?

Lazy journalism or fact ?

It’s actually my words Mike.

Only what I’ve heard and remember Etheridge has been out of the spot light for a long time and caught get in the first team.

It’s criminal we didn’t sell him to West Ham when they came sniffing with a big time offer

Another shambles by the club hierarchy

I bet you would have said look at the hierarchy selling our best players if we had done so at the time

Where does it say Birmingham are a Foreign club???

Read correctly a total different club/ story

When did the sacking of Warnock happen.
Anyway might be worth waiting to sell Etheridge a little bit in case some hard to turn down offers come in for Smithies.

If anyone had come with a big offer he would have been sold, it was paper talk. Remember they said we would get 10m for Dave Marshall, he went for 2m. We’d jump at that for Etheridge!

He's probably on a good wage so to get him off the books would be great. Smithies is a better all round keeper and deserves to be number one. Etheridge was a good shot stopper but didn't command his area or marshall the defence, and he never improved his distribution which was dire. Good luck to him as he is nice fella.

A massive shame for a player that has served Cardiff City FC so well

He went from being 'unknown' to being 'talked about' in the Premier League

Our support has an unfortunate habit of knocking rather than appreciating what it has and should Alex Smithies be injured, the same ones shouting 'get shot of him' will be the same ones saying why didn't we keep a quality back up

Smithies or Etheridge?

A tough one depending on your view of a goalkeeper; but the simple fact is that either is good enough for our team and it's a position we have rarely struggled in for many years

Wherever you end up (one non-foreign place apart) I wish you well, Neil Etheridge! :ayatollah: :bluescarf: :bluebird:

Agree entirely. I am baffled how some people on this forum seem to knock him when he was one of our best players for two years. As for those who call him just a shot stopper they obviously weren't at Old Trafford where his display was top class. Made a few crucial saves but more importantly was coolness itself and commanded his box. I cant believe it looks like he is going on a free. Madness.

If he goes and we get a fee - then we will have made a profit on the fee we bought him in at .

If he stays then we again have 2 top keepers in our squad :bluebird:

Exactly as I see it  we'd have two of the best keepers in the division again if he stays,if not as you say a sale will show a profit on him, which is a change. :old: :bluebird:

Sadly, we have some deliberate people on this Forum looking to 'knock' everyone and everything for their own sport

As for Etheridge, it seems crazy that he's going at all; and for little or no fee (if true) is almost offensive :(

Stay and fight for the jersey, if you're good enough the chance will come, if you're not good enough.... Improve!!!

We probably have two of the best keepers in the league and in my opinion the best goalkeeping coach :notworthy:

This reminds me of when we had Marshall and Heaton on the bench

Imo they were 2 of the best keepers in the league at that point

Agree and if we get promotion we will need two top keepers! We should only sell one of our top keepers if we get a realistic fee and they want to go as we can always send Day out on loan again this season. The fee would then go to purchase a right back or another Tomlin!

Yes I was thinking the same. Heaton was the one to move on first and did very well for himself. When Marshall finally left a few years later Goalkeeper became a problem position for us for a while.

Yeah I pulled him for that earlier saying if we had sold him he would have had a dig for that.

In his defence he said he probably would have.

As nice as it is having two quality keepers in the squad, it is a bit of a luxury. Both on a decent wage as well. If selling/loaning out Etheridge means we can strengthen the squad in other positions then it's a no brainer really. The fact we got him on a free would also make it good business as well if we get a fee for him.

During lockdown, I played a football management game on the iPad through sheer boredom. According to that (and they’re normally pretty accurate with information), Smithies is on 30k p/w and Etheridge either 20k or 22k p/w. If these figures are correct, wage-wise Etheridge would be the one to keep, but personally, I’d like to hold onto them both given the importance of the goalkeeper position.

I see your thinking re wages but I think Smithies is a better all round keeper and we need a top stopper even if it means that our reserve eventually leaves. All opinions tho.

Re: ‘ Latest on Neil Etheridge ‘

Don’t we still have Day as back up? He’s more than competent.

Also, I saw young George Radcliffe playing for Barry Town last year and although the level of football in the League of Wales is poor, his keeping was excellent, especially as an 18 year old , and I wouldn’t have any qualms about him as back up either.

Transfer fees aren’t that important at our level - wages are the big thing. A player on £20k a week costs a £1m a year. Two top class goalkeepers on that amount or more are a luxury at our level, added to the fact that Etheridge is moving into his 30s now and needs to be playing.

It was great to see Etheridge improve during his time with us and there were few problems from him during the Premier League season. But I think it’s better all round if he moves on now.

If I had to choose, my opinion would be the same as yours. I would also go for Smithies and I agree, he is a better all round goalkeeper. I was just being greedy and saying I’d like to keep them both.

I genuinely think we have a shot at the top two if we keep our squad together and add a RB (or two) and a couple of youth players around the fringes.
