" Crowds could still return in October with 30% capacity "

Fri Aug 14, 2020 9:09 am

The UK Government have approved pilot schemes for sporting events with supporters present, including the World Snooker Championship Final at The Crucible in Sheffield over the weekend.

They have said if these pilots are successful, then supporters could return to sporting events from October 1st which is good news for the Premier League and the EFL.

So October could see football stadiums with Capacities of 30%.

Fans will be allowed into the Crucible Theatre this weekend for the final of the World Snooker Championship.

The government has announced that the programme of pilots, which were paused at the end of July, can resume from this weekend.

That means the Crucible will welcome around 300 fans for the final two days.

If the pilots are a success the government says it could lead to other sports venues being opened to socially-distanced fans from 1 October.

More pilot events are due to be announced in the coming days, involving indoor and outdoor sports.

"We are delighted to announce that a reduced crowd will be welcomed to all sessions of the final of the World Championship on Saturday and Sunday," World Snooker said.

"The piloting of a small number of sporting events to test the safe return of spectators will resume from 15 August with a view to reopening competition venues for sports fans, with social distancing measures in place from 1 October," the government said in a statement.

"This will commence with the final of the World Snooker Championship at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre during 15-16 August, with a full pilot programme to follow."

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden added: "We can now make further careful progress on recovery with allowing audiences back for indoor performances, fans back at sports events and the reopening of more Covid-19 secure leisure businesses."

The World Snooker Championship became the first indoor live sports event in England to have crowds since lockdown, allowing some supporters in for the three sessions on 31 July

However, no more fans have been allowed to watch live sport since 1 August because of a spike in cases that led to all pilots being called off, including Glorious Goodwood and county cricket at The Oval and Edgbaston.

Five-time champion Ronnie O'Sullivan previously criticised the decision to allow fans into the arena, saying it created an "unnecessary risk", while qualifier Anthony Hamilton, who suffers from severe asthma, withdrew on the eve of the tournament.

It has not yet been confirmed how many fans will be permitted to attend on Saturday and Sunday, but seating plans had been devised that would enable audience members only to sit directly next to people who they purchased tickets with and were members of the same household groups.

Such arrangements would enable a metre of space between people from separate bubbles.

The code of conduct for fans instructed them they had to wear a mask while walking around the Crucible, but could remove it while watching the action, and the bars would not be open.

Much as I would love it I really cant see it happening at 30%. That would be 10,000 at Cardiff. I really cant see how you can have social distancing in place with that number. Its not just the seating arrangements, its things like toilets and very importantly getting in and out of the ground. 5,000 is a more realistic figure.

The daft thing is that you could start Welsh League football tomorrow and their would be no issue as most clubs could easily cope with 500 people which is way above average attendances for most of them. What a boost for these clubs and the League in general as I am sure in the absence of other live sport people would flock to it. Same can be said for County cricket.

I have renewed my season ticket but I’m got no intention on returning to the ground to watch any games until next year the earliest or there is a vacation

Don't believe anything we're told by any government anymore - and this is just more bullshit.

What realistically is going to change between now and October to allow this?

Now that deaths supposedly "from" Covid have dwindled to almost nothing the new tool of fear is the number of infections which we are told keep rising.

By October there will almost certainly have been a "second wave" or even "third wave" of manipulated figures, and we'll be on the verge of winter and the scientists will say that the risk is much greater in winter so we can't risk allowing fans into grounds.

I also have grave doubts that by October children will actually be back in school - especially if the teaching unions have their way.

Until we are all injected with a government approved vaccine I just can't see how life can ever go back to what it was in March if it ever does again. Until then our lives will all be dictated by scientists, infections, dubiously calculated death figures, R rates, manipulated statistics, second, third, fourth, fifth waves etc.

Can anyone honestly foresee a time when even 20,000 will be allowed back into the CCS with no "social distancing", face masks, no chanting, one way systems?

If you can, please let me know when you think that will be and how it is going to be achieved?

Spot On davids - Agree with you, just look at what happened this year with sporting events .
Might not be large numbers to what went on in March but anything over 30 = Mass gatherings in this country ;)

Apparently, 9000 season tickets bought to date, which is around 1/3 of capacity without the Upper Ninian Stand

Logical that these should/will get priority come the restricted crowd games ;)
