There will be no FA Cup replays during the 2020-21 season

Thu Aug 13, 2020 11:56 am

There will be no FA Cup replays during the 2020-21 season to "ease pressure" on the football calendar.

The competition will start with the extra preliminary around on 1 September and the final is due to be played at Wembley Stadium on 15 May 2021.

It has also been announced the Carabao Cup semi-finals will be one-legged.

The first round is scheduled for 5 September, while the next three rounds will be played on consecutive midweek dates from 15-16 September.

Fixtures for the 2020-21 English Football League (EFL) season will be released on 21 August with the Championship, League One and League Two all scheduled to start on 12 September.

BBC Sport understands Premier League fixtures will be announced next week.

FA Cup prize money has been halved from 2019-20 because of the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The winners will receive £1.8m, down from £3.6m last season, in line with the 2017-18 campaign.

The draws for the FA Cup extra preliminary and preliminary rounds, and the EFL Cup first round, will be made on 18 August.

The EFL Cup final will take place at Wembley on 28 February 2021.

The EFL Trophy will start on 8-9 September with the Wembley final on 14 March.

Good chance of clubs like us getting to the final as with that prize money the big boys might just try youngsters.

Oh I love the FA Cup :ayatollah:

You are right its nothing to do with TV. For us oldies the introduction of penalties was abhorrent. Bring back the second or third replay!! I remember us playing York at St. Andrews I think - we lost -and Sunderland at Maine Road- we won- in second replays. And didn't Palace play the Jacks at Ninian. Teams only had small squads then 16 or 17 and just one substitute. And no wingeing!

Torquay in the 1st round of league cup , which was already a home and away 2 leg affair went to a replay..
on that note....the first of those games away to Torquay evening kick off on a glorious Saturday 43 years ago yesterday... . thousands of us in Torquay drinking all day, not so many in the ground by 7.30 though..
and yes the Swansea Palace game at NP...after 2 draws the clubs tossed a coin to decide who would pick where the neutral venue would be.. Swansea won the toss... doubt they would pick the CCS if it were today...?

If you’re happy just settling for promotion it’s roughly 440/1
To win the Championship and the FA Cup we’re 1140/1

Worth a fiver?

I used to live in Torquay in the eighties and they dreaded the Cardiff game which in those days was a fairly regular fixture. My local was The Landsdown which was opposite the police station. I was having a pint a couple of hours after one game when an almost empty coach from South Wales pulled up outside and about 30 people were escorted from the nick onto the bus and sent on their merry way.

This is the correct decision.

Huge fixture backlog this season with both Premier League and EFL clubs having to play a lot of midweek matches as well as their weekend matches.

Don't be surprised to see Under 23 sides in both domestic competitions from Premier League clubs and those fighting at the top end of the Championship.

Things will hopefully return to normal from 2021/22 - I hope this doesn't become standard now.

I can see both sides, but for me,I'd like to see next goal the winner,no pens at all.but that's me,it would certainly make it entertaining ,as in some games it could be over in the 1st minute of extra time,in others not so,but would at least make teams go for it.just my fancy :laughing5: :old: :bluebird:

What about the 70's/80's USA soccer shoot out if scores level...a player had to beat the keeper starting about 30 yards out?

:)

I agree with you.

Would rather see a golden goal than penalties but a match can't go on forever and penalties definitively set a stalemate

I get you on the games can't go on forever, how about if still level after extra time, give it to the team with most shots on target,at least teams would have to try to attack more! (I really need to stop writing my crazy ideas down :laughing5: ) :old: :bluebird:

Great decision for both cups this season and will see supporters get a 'result' on the day/night :thumbright:

Hopefully, normal service resumes for the following season but we might just see this as a trial with the bigger clubs pushing their 'overplayed' agendas again; and I wouldn't agree with that for 'smaller club' financial reasons

I seem to recall reading in a book when I was a kid that it was used in the war time games and the longest game was at Ninian against the Wurzels. Think it was in Roy of the Rovers or something like that so not sure if I am mixing fact with fiction! Has anyone else heard of it?

are the European competitions being stream lined or are they going continue with 12 group games to knock 2 teams out ?
