" Italian champions sack manager "

Sat Aug 08, 2020 1:00 pm

Juventus have sacked Maurizio Sarri following their away goals defeat to Lyon in the Champions League Last 16 on Friday night.

Juventus once again won the Serie A title in 2020 for the ninth consecutive season but Sarri's failure to guide the Turin club in the Quarter Finals of the Champions League has cost him his job.

Sarri only took charge at the start of the season, after leaving Chelsea.

It is believed that Italian legend Andrea Pirlo is being lined up to replace him, just a week after being named manager of the club's Under 23 side.

Andrea Pirlo was named as the Juventus manager on Saturday night but only after president Andrea Agnelli decided he could not afford first choices Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane.

Former Tottenham boss Pochettino reportedly wanted around £8million (€9m) a year to take the reins in Turin, while Real Madrid head coach Zidane would have asked for even more, at around £10.8m (€12m).

As well as economic reasons, particularly given sacked coach Maurizio Sarri's £21m pay-off, Pirlo has a similar on-field mentality to previous successful Juventus managers Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri, which has worked in his favour with Agnelli.
