Middlesbrough identify Cardiff's Junior Hoilett as a potential summer signing

The 30-year-old Canadian winger has played under Neil Warnock at QPR and in the Welsh capital

Warnock is already after ex Cardiff City player Lee Peltier as he is a free agent and the talk in the camp is a few more players could be on their way from Cardiff to Boro.

Middlesbrough are believed to be looking at Cardiff winger Junior Hoilett as a potential summer signing.

If the 30-year-old Canadian international does join Boro it will be the third time he’s played under Neil Warnock following spells at QPR and in the Welsh Capital.

Hoilett has one year remaining on his current deal and was a regular for the Bluebirds last season.

Since agreeing a long-term contract last week, Warnock has been working hard with the Middlesbrough recruitment team to secure the players he needs to overhaul a squad he believes is unbalanced.

Last week he signed former QPR defender Grant Hall on a free transfer and talks are ongoing with other targets.

Boro are understood to be in the hunt to sign Tottenham midfielder Luke Amos. The 23-year-old spent last season on loan at QPR and Rangers boss is understood to want to re-sign the former England youth international.

Hoilett and Warnock know each other well.

The player was on QPR’s books when Warnock took charge at Loftus Road for the second time in his career in October 2015.

Then, when he want to Cardiff as Paul Trollope’s replacement a year later, he signed Hoilett, who was by that time a free agent having left Rangers at the end of the 2015/16 season.

Speaking at the time of the signing, Warnock said: "I'm so glad that nobody snapped him up before I came to Cardiff. He's a super lad and a gem of a boy. When you can get a player like that it's very good for the squad because he can change a game in two minutes.

NEIL WARNOCK:

"It's one of those things that as a manager you're really proud of when you have somebody (Hoilett) like I did at QPR. I brought him in and he did brilliantly for me."

JUNIOR HOILETT:

Hoilett, who initially signed a short-term deal, said at the time: “I’m really pleased to be here and I’m ready to go.

“The manager puts belief in his players and this is a great group of lads. Everyone loves playing for the Gaffer. I’m here to hopefully bring some more creativity and goals. I can’t wait to get started.”

Hoilett also praised Warnock during their time together at Rangers.

He said: “It helps if someone believes in you. When Neil Warnock came in he showed belief,I love playing for him."

"I’m happy to be able to express myself on the pitch and it has given me a great boost. Any player would feel the same way, especially when you’re told not to worry about making mistakes.”

Hoilett made 45 appearances for Cardiff last season and scored seven goals. He signed a new three year deal with City in June 2018 shortly after the club won promotion to the Premier League.

I have to say fair play to Warnock even at his age he still has the passion and will prob get BORO in the top 6.

I for one will remember him as a very good manager at Cardiff and loved him here.

His Cv says it all :thumbright: :thumbright:

Pack and Paterson will go with Hoilett and I think Bamba will retire and take over Boro under 23s to advance himself.

Quite right but I also think we are looking like we are moving forward under Harris. :ayatollah:

Yes I agree we are moving forward and I also agree that Warnock (like him or not) did so much for us as a club.

This sort of thing will not surprise e now the dust has settled over this season and there is not much time to get things ready for the new campaign.

We could be in for some quick moves over the next month. I can see us off loading a few of our players and seeing them join up with Warnock. Bamba and Hoilett are the 2 I can see going. This will allow us to bring in a few others and that is what interests me.

Only going ot happen if we offload the likes of Hoilett then I feel it will only be short change.

Tan has always wanted the academy to produce our players because its the cheap option. Will that model sustain the club in the Championship only time will tell. Its a shame he did not get on with Sam as lets be honest here the acedemy under his reign is the ony time it has produced.

Will always be be a legend here for what he done on and off the field :bluescarf: He could be very useful too if he takes some players off our hands as well.
I hope I in the stadium when we play Middlesbrough at home :occasion5:

With Junior Hoilett turning 30 and with only 1 year left on his contract it would appear to be a good move allowing the player to move on.

The downside is have we got anything like a replacement who can produce the same goals or assists? JH is a class act.

r

Producing players via the academy is only a cheap option if it actually produces players. For us it is a extremely expensive option as it has not produced a decent player for twelve years. It is a cheap option for Hereford,Weston-Super-Mare Torquay etc as it cost them nothing and they get some decent players.

How u can say Tan is looking for a cheap option?? hes spent enough on keeping afloat and spent millions on crap, hes prob thinking why isn't our youth system producing like every fan. No doubt Harris will get a good few quid and money from player sales too

If we want a good academy we need to start by speaking to Dave Merrington

I learned a lot about him when I was involved in the Bob Higgins historic sex abuse case

BH looked after the 13-16 year olds
DM looked after the 17-18 year old

Both at Southampton

All I would say is look at the Southampton junior squads around 1985 and see the players who come through

I’ve represented some of them. Can’t say who sorry lol. But DM knows how to get academy players into premier league players - and not just football league players

Harris and Warnock are now at the right clubs.
Harris does deserve to be backed to get us to automatic spot but I think boro will still struggle to make top 6.... hats off to Warnock as he’s doing what he does best and better than most managers ...players in /out.
If we lose Murphy and Holliiet it leaves us light as I don’t think Harris rates Whyte but in Harris we should now trust...he deserves it.

not a bad shout... Malcom Elias who was also at Southampton along with Liverpool and is currently head of recruitment at Fulham could also be a shout...and he is Welsh..

Sir Neil Warnock is the best thing that ever happened to our club since I have been knocking around. Club in turmoil, fans fighting amongst ourselves and dire football on the pitch which would have seen us relegated. Up steps the messiah and the rest is history.

Moving forward, Neil Harris has already proven himself in my opinion and should be backed, not only by the club but more importantly by us fans. :bluebird:

good luck to boro, and warnock. Boro fans will have a blast and will enjoy the us v them mentality he'll try and create.
I think under Harris we have moved on a bit. he wants to bring in some new faces. I think Harris / Warnock are very similar in terms of players they like. Just hope that Harris uses some of the kids from the academy.

But if the academy isnt bringing through players to the 1st team - there is little point in having one. We are just a feeder club to bristol rovers otherwise
