Fulham a new derby team?

Mon Jul 27, 2020 8:51 pm

Anyone else feel like Fulham are becoming a new derby team? Since first playing them in 2013 (first time since the 80’s) we’ve played Fulham 16 times and Swansea only 4 times.

We were battling for relegation together, battling for promotion together, battling relegation together again last season and now fighting in the play offs for promotion once again.

Obviously I’m not saying the level of derby match beats out Swansea or Bristol but Fulham have been one of our most consistent rivals for several years now (and their fans are a bunch of wankers). Personally I hate the pricks :ayatollah:
Thoughts?

Yes seems like every year we are battling with them for relegation or promotion! Probably because we are at same level maybe its the London effect that they can seduce good players to go there while we struggle to attract that special player like mitrovic..

Plus the fact that they pay millions of more money on players over the last few years than we have and much higher wages - they seem more willing to gamble on success than our owner rightly or wrongly.

Is there a right of wrong way? Brentford sold around 130m of players and spent about 70m over last ten years for little or no success. As for Fulham for all their spending they've had success but not sustained success... our trouble is we dont sustain the spending we do it one year fail and cost cut next just no continuity perhaps if we had a long term plan we may get somewhere..

Does a derby need to be based on location only? We’ve not played Newport since the 80’s yet if we got them in the cup next year would they be our biggest Derby game despite not playing them for nearly 40years?
Fulham have been our direct rivals in the league for 4 of the last 7 seasons whereas Swansea and Bristol have barely been competing with us. 4 games against Swansea since the first PL season compared to 16 against Fulham who have been our direct rivals for many of those games. A lot of the younger fans might consider Fulham bigger rivals than Swansea due to the frequency of games played.

First time since the 80s??

We played them a fair bit all through the 90s before Al Fayed took over and they went up the Leagues.

They have been a promotion rival on a couple of occasions over the past few seasons other than that I think most people would see them as no different to any other of the London Clubs, they would be very low on my list of Clubs I 'hate'. Bit of a non entity really, like Watford for example. Don't really give them much thought most of the time and playing them hardly stirs the emotions.

That's what I was thinking, remember playing them in the 90s old div 4/3 when Jimmy Hill was their manager.

You’re right we played them a few times in the 90’s I misread wiki. I get your views and I imagine a fair few people share them. I’m only in my 20’s so my list of teams I “hate” is fairly small but apart from being told I need to dislike Swansea due to location they’ve not done much to annoy me whereas Fulham in recent years have been persistently bugging me.

My first away game was Fulham the year after we got promoted think it was 93. Cardiff got in the side stand and there was a load of Chelsea in there. Even after that there was no anymosity really in future games. So agree with you mate, non starter for me

I remember Coleman in charge in the 90's. We were 2up and dancing n drinking on the way out of NP.

Opening game.

5 minutes left and drew 2-2.

Alcohol used might be wrong.

When they up in the shit from FFP after the end of next season when they haven't been promoted they wont be close to us anymore as they will be doomed for a few years.
