Totally inept. 600,000 people in Spain and the government is asking them all to quarantine when they come back from a country with less deaths than in your average northern or midlands city.

The uk are more honest in reporting or are over reporting I’ve known of 2 people with Covid on death certificate with no symptoms shown they were just old and frail.

Also deaths and infection rates can be different probably spainish people in general are a lot healthy that brits.

This tables show the infection rate and might help in answering you question some what.

The only place I can guarantee being 100% honest is the Balearic Islands and I know for a fact all the hospitals are zero virus now.

As to main Govts I don’t trust many and def not Boris Johnson the biggest bullshitter of all.

Unfortunately the islands are getting grouped in with Spain which is totally ridiculous as like you said completely safe. And you right if anything the islanders such keep everyone else out even the mainland but unfortunately I imagine this isn’t possible. The whole thing is a mess.

The incompetence of The Tories has led to thousands needlessly dying. What's even scarier is that millions of people will still vote Tory, no matter how badly they run the country.

Come on mate don’t be daft, don’t you know it’s all Labour’s fault despite not being in power for nearly 11 years? :?

Damned if they do - damned if they dont.

Ok so yesterday they announced a 14 day return quarantine on Spain without notice.
If they had delayed for 7 days - Labour would have accused the Govt of not acting fast enough to stop the potential spread. And as they did act fast enough - they are now accused of being too hasty.

It's easy this politics stuff - all you need is a degree in hindsight. If it turns out to be the correct thing to do - the opposition will say they agreed with it - but would have acted even sooner. If it turns out to be the wrong decision they'll go back to their acted too soon rhetoric.

Im inclined to just let them get on with it. Who wants to go on holiday in a 30degree heat - and have to wear a mask - it'll wreck your suntan for a start.

What the Labour party says or does is irrelevant as they're not in power. It's time for the Tory government to be held accountable for its' many failings over Covid 19. Completely agree about the mask wrecking your suntan though!

Totally agree - but usually when someone doesnt agree with someone else they offer up an alternative solution.
Labour would be doing the same as the current govt - following the medical advice the best they can whilst trying to make sure they dont damage the economy or our health even further.
The Ballerics should be treated differently than main land Spain though

Personnally I have a suspision this could be Brexit related and the governement trying to show spain how much they rely on british holiday makers? Considering Spain are digging their heels in on fishing rights. Only just a random guess. I saw the other day that British tourists are around 20-25% of spanish tourist GDP.

Also... I think anyone that wants to travel abroad in this current climax is a bit mad if you ask me. and I say that whatever country you're traveling to. There is constant talk of second waves ect.. and personally I would much rather be home if I were to fall ill then be in a forgien country where there is a potential for insurance not to payout.

How do Spanish numbers compare with the UK?

Speaking about quarantine rules, Spanish MEP Jose Ramon Bauza told the BBC's Today programme that Spanish coronavirus numbers were "far better than those in Britain".

He said: "Just two days ago, the UK had 2,356 new patients infected with Covid and, sadly, 146 [British] passed away, but the same day in Spain there were just 922 new infected and just three people died".

His numbers for Spain on 24 July are correct, but he's not right about the UK figures for that day - 123 deaths were reported and 768 new infections, according to government figures.

There are challenges with comparing countries (in terms of how countries count deaths and how they test for coronavirus) and just using the figures for a single day.

If you look over the last fortnight then, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Spain recorded 39 cases per 100,000 inhabitants - more than double that of the UK or France (both at 15 cases per 100,000 residents).

And the trend in Spain is a sharp increase in the number of infections recorded daily, which is not the case in the UK.

UK the ninth country to pass 300,000 cases

The United Kingdom is the ninth country to pass the 300,000 confirmed Covid-19 cases mark, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Currently the US, Brazil, India, Russia, South Africa, Peru, Mexico and Chile all have had more cases.

With seven more confirmed deaths the UK has had its lowest daily rise since early March, although reporting on Mondays tends to be lower.

However, the UK is currently third for overall deaths in the world, according to Johns Hopkins, with only the US and Brazil having suffered more fatalities.

Why would anyone want a car crash ,it's the same with the virus ,and it's the old elephant trail scenario,if numbers are going up in Spain you know it takes two to three weeks for symptoms to show ,so you can guarantee the actual numbers are at least three times more ,so why would you then carry on sending British tourists to make the problem even worse , you've all seen how quickly the numbers can rise ,if you wait till then you are not nipping it in the bud and we are back at square one ,if money wasn't involved no one would question the quarantine.
