Wales stalwart Chris Gunter released by Championship side Reading

The former Cardiff City man has been let go by the club

Sunday 26th July 2020

Wales' most-capped men's footballer Chris Gunter has been released by Championship club Reading.

The 96-capped full-back, 31, joined the Royals from Nottingham Forest following Reading's promotion to the Premier League in 2012.

The man with more Wales caps than any other now leaves the Madejski Stadium for good after eight years and 314 appearances.

Reading were in the relegation places when Mark Bowen succeeded Jose Gomes as manager last autumn, but ended the season 14th.

Gunter endured a difficult start to the season under Gomes, spending the entire months of August, September and October last year with the under-23s as he seemingly fell down the pecking order.

The former Cardiff City player was even told last summer to find a new club and was left out of the pre-season tour of Spain, but a transfer never materialised and he was sent to train with the under-23s along with fellow exiled star Garath McCleary, who has also now been released.

Bowen was later appointed head coach in October 2019, and Gunter went on to make 20 Championship appearances this season.

Gunter is one of five first-team players to be let go at the end of the month as their contracts came to an end, and is joined by McCleary, Jordan Obita, Charlie Adam and Tyler Blackett.

A club statement said: "Model professionals throughout their careers at Madejski Stadium, we would like to sincerely thank them for their hard work and dedication to the club, whilst wishing them the very best of luck in their future careers."

Still a good player at championship level .

He would be good back up in our squad for the right back position where we currently have nobody going into next season.
If wages are reasonable then I would have him back here but hopefully not as a first choice.

Released by Reading tells you everything you need to know. Another Joe Ledley and if he wasnt Welsh, there would be no interest in him at all.

there is likely to be many decent players not having contracts renewed due to covid and clubs lacked cash Clubs below the premiership are doing all they can to cut costs and players will have to accept lower salaries in general

Didn't he once make it clear he wouldn't come back to Cardiff as he wanted bigger and better?

Not quite sure of the logic behind having him back. Forgetting his connection to the City, he's just been released by an average Championship club. If for instance Sheffield Wednesday released a non-Welsh 31 year old player, how many on here would be suggesting that we sign him up ? Very few if any I would imagine.

if id watched this Sheffield fella have as many decent games as ive seen Gunter have..i would , no matter where he came from
..well not so much if we get promoted but as a championship player and the fact Reading are average doesnt mean a player from there is poor..

Hes a decent player who will not be massive wages and would be a free signing. We have no right backs for next season at the moment and he would be perfect to challenge for that position with whoever else we sign as we will need two.

If we are to believe we have very little money to improve the squad next season in this league then he is a smart signing in my opinion.

If we go up I wouldnt bother.

Regardless of how many good games he's had in the past, why is he being released by a bang average Championship club and what is the attraction of snapping him up on a free if his better days are behind him ?

Regardless of where we are next season, we have to be more ambitious than this, especially if the club doesn't just want to stagnate.

With the finances of many clubs now being severely impacted by the lockdown, there will not be a shortage of decent players becoming available at the end of this season, so let's see what business NH and his team can do to further the ambitions of the club.

ive seen a lot worse and we have had worse , he was 31 last week which doesnt make him ancient either. he is being released because....i dont know mate i could give you a list of possible reasons. out of contract in an epidemic ? doesnt fit the managers style ? doesnt get on with manager /team mates , nailed a directors wife etc etc... no idea.... but i do know we signed Sol and Junior who had been released by mid table clubs and i think they turned out ok ? you cant right a player off just because the club he was with are mid table though thats for sure..
anyway he isnt some one im desperate to sign.. and no doubt Harris has his own ideas.. but he is reliable and plays in a position thats needed strengthening in my view for years...

If we don't go up he would be a good addition to the squad on modest wages.

That's nothing to do with the Welsh/Cardiff connection either, it's based on the fact he's a solid pro, a decent full back and would bring experience and a good attitude to a Championship squad.

I'm not suggesting he would be first choice, but he would be damn good cover in a position that nerds it, genuinely surprised why people would be so against it.

If we are in the Championship next season I'd be quite happy if we could get Sanderson back on loan and Gunter on a free.

Any other position than right back and you would say definitely not but right back is the area where we do need to get someone in. Like others I would prefer him as a back up rather than first choice. There will probably be one or two right backs released by premier league clubs who will be better bets but perhaps we should not dismiss him out of hand. If Reading are releasing him though he may need to drop a division.

The problem is players dropping from the Premier league would command bigger wages . I doubt we can afford two players like that with one sitting on the bench all season, more likely we would get one of them and Someone like Gunter to provide back up.

Agreed Gunter with his vast experience could help a young fullback like Sanderson become a much better player particularly with his positioning and when to break forward!
