Birmingham City have retired 17 year old Jude Bellingham's number 22 shirt.
He has just joined Borussia Dortmund.

It would be like us retiring Ramsey's when he left us. Because he was pretty good and a nice guy.
Very bizarre.

what jumped into my mind when i read this was Trevor Francis , Brum player made his debut at 16 , and actually scored all four goals in a 4-0 victory in his debut season. the resulting excitement actually saw Brums attendances bounce from around 13k to well into the 20s, i think it peaked with one of over 40k during a season where as a club they were bang average mid table... not only did he go on to be an england international, a european cup winner and the first £1 million player but played hundreds of games for Birmingham... times have changed...

I thought of Francis immediately. I believe he made his debut against us at Ninian as a sub.The 4 goals he scored were around the same time as Warboys scored 4 for us. We played them away the week we played Real Madrid and we were top I think and they were coming with a charge. Almost 50,000 there that day. As a 14 year old got ambushed coming off the train at New Street and hid in a TV shop pretending to want to buy one. But that's another story!

i think they wee on a run, but back then with only 2 promoted and no play offs a bad start often made it almost impossible to actually turn it around... and yes we lost, we dropped points on most Saturdays following European games... probably cost us promotion ?

It was the season we lost 1-0 at home to relegation threatened Watford in our last or last but one home game and then 5-1 at Sheff Utd. Great season though to be a 14 year old travelling the country on football specials!
