Interview today Tuesday 21st July 2020

Nelson on making the position his own and Neil Harris' influence

Keeping Flint out?

"It’s one of those things. I played a lot of games with him. The manager is spoilt for choice. Having someone push you that much keeps you on top of your game."

Quiet confidence?

"I think it wouldn’t be right if we weren’t confident. We go into every game thinking we can win. We just need to make it happen."

Made the position your own? Secret to your consistency?

"It’s been a challenge. Football isn’t a sport you can be content with not challenging yourself. You might only get one opportunity so you have to push yourself and be a student."

Harris?

"Since the gaffer came in, things have changed around the changing room. It’s a clean slate for everyone so everyone has to impress. We’re playing a different way too. Maybe that suits us as a team better. We’re playing with more confidence."

Defining quality of the squad?

"I think resilience. We’re a hard team to beat. That’s pleasing for me."

Nelson on establishing himself in the team alongside the skipper

Established yourself in a team?

"It's pleasing on a personal level but the goal is promotion. It doesn’t matter whether I play 10 or 40 games a season as long as I’m helping the team."

Short summer break?

"If we get promoted, I’ll be back the next day. I don’t care."

Sean Morrison?

"We’ve got a lot of experience through the squad and Moz has been unbelievable to share a changing room with.

"Then you’ve got Sol and Rallsy. Everyone understands what it’s like. It’s good having that team around you. I’ve enjoyed playing with the pressure."

Nelson on promotion and the Swans chasing them?

Dared to look at promotion?

"Everyone has a little look. It’s important we don’t get ahead of ourselves. The one on Wednesday is important and then we go from there."

Should be straightforward?

"Nothing in football ever is. We have to take it seriously."

Swansea?

"It doesn’t matter who it is behind us. We have to stay in the driving seat."

Nelson on play-offs, lockdown and zoom meetings

One game to go? Something you expected?

"When I signed, the manager said we wanted to go straight back up. That message has continued since so I guess we expected it. We’d have liked automatic, but we’ll take the play-off."

Lockdown motivation?

"It was tough on players, but it allowed us a break. The motivation was there and we knew what we had to do. We’ve come back on the front foot."

Virtual training? Bring you closer together?

"Yeah it was something to look forward to when we saw the lads on a screen, having banter. It's something we still miss now. It was nice to have a chat."
