CARDIFF CITY v HULL CITY
Wednesday 22nd July, 7.30pm
Sky Bet Championship
Cardiff City Stadium

Cardiff City XI (4-2-3-1): Smithies; Bacuna, Morrison, Nelson, Benentt; Pack, Ralls; Mendez-Laing, Tomlin, Hoilett; Glatzel

Cardiff City will guarantee a play-off place with a point.

Hull City need to win to stand any chance of avoiding relegation to League One.

What is the latest team news

Cardiff City have been fortunate enough since football returned in that they have suffered very few injuries.

The odd knock and niggle is to be expected, of course, but they have thankfully not endured anything too serious.

As a result, Bluebirds boss Neil Harris will likely have the luxury of selecting from the same group of players as he did last time out.

City continue to monitor the progress of Lee Tomlin, who has started each of City's last two games, so that might be the only major consideration, especially if they do reach the play-offs.

But they have to get there first, of course, and will need a point against Hull to ensure that is the case, so expect a strong team.

Greg Cunningham and Isaac Vassell are still the long-term absentees.

Neil Harris

What's the latest on Junior Hoilett?

"Nothing serious. He struggled leading into the game. He wasn’t 100% but after scoring against Derby, it was important to have your experienced players on the pitch.

"He gave it a go and wasn’t great. He’s no worse than he was. It’s muscular so it’s tightness. He’s not ruled out though. It’s his groin, but it might be his glutes."

TEAM NEWS: :bluebird:

Greg Cunningham is still a little way off at the moment.
He is back in full training with the first team.

Isaac Vassell is still out injured.

Hull will be fighting for there lives . They will sit deep and try and hit us on the counter.

To win this we need to score early as they will have to come out and score, the longer it goes the harder it will get for us .

I fear a 0-0 draw as both teams will struggle to break each other down. But the Jacks wont win either.

no thanks.... the chance of losing to them in a final doesnt appeal at all. id much prefer them to lose out on GD and then continue towards their lower league tour..

I am quietly confident that we will reach the play offs. If and when we do, we will be delighted to be involved, whereas our opponents, whoever they may be, will be gutted as they would have wanted/expected automatic promotion. :bluescarf: :bluebird: :bluescarf: :occasion5:

Manager Neil Harris hopes that Cardiff City's run to the Championship play-offs has settled any doubts that he deserves to be at the helm.

Cardiff will be in the play-offs regardless of other results if they avoid defeat to relegation-threatened Hull City on Wednesday night.

"I like to think I've proven myself... that I deserve to be here and that I can carry the club forward," he said.

"I've been part of the ride and want it to continue past Wednesday night."

Harris' appointment in November, replacing Neil Warnock, was not universally welcomed by some Bluebirds fans.

Cardiff were 14th in the Championship at the time, seven points outside the top six.

Roll forward eight months to last weekend when Cardiff won 3-1 at Middlesbrough - a side now managed by Warnock - to put themselves within one result of clinching a play-off berth.

"We've got momentum and I can't wait for Wednesday as I'm enjoying watching my team - that's a big thing, the way we're playing at the moment," Harris said.

Harris' pre-match thoughts

“We have to make sure we’re the best we can be, with and without the ball. That’ll be the same against Hull.

“We know what we have to do and what we need points-wise to get through to the play-offs. We won’t worry about what other teams are doing. It’s purely about Cardiff City.”

Asked about being within touching distance of the Premier League, Harris added: “When you say it’s only four games, it seems close. But anything beyond Hull is disrespectful to them.

Re: TEAM NEWS " CARDIFF CITY v HULL CITY " MATCH THREAD

Wed Jul 22, 2020 4:50 pm

Hull City manager Grant McCann: "It’s still mathematically possible we can stay up, albeit very small. We need to win at Cardiff and hope results go our way elsewhere.

“(It's) Everyone’s fault. It’s mine, the players, everyone connected inside the training ground. We are where we are for a lot of different reasons but we haven’t been good enough on the pitch.

“Just not winning enough games from the end of January onwards. We’ve been really poor. We’ve been disappointing but we’ve still got a chance. We’ve got to go to Cardiff and try to get a result.”

How the play-off situation looks

5 Nottingham Forest - P 45; GS 57; GA 46; GD +11; Pts 70

6 Cardiff City - P 45; GS 65; GA 58; GD +7; Pts 70

7 Swansea City - P 45; GS 58; GA 52; GD +6; Pts 67

(P = Played; GS = Goals scored; GA = Goals against; GD = Goal difference; Pts = Points)

Teams are separated on points gained, then goal difference, then goals scored and then their head-to-head record from the current season.

What Cardiff need to do to secure a top-six place

The Bluebirds are in sixth place, sitting three points above Swansea City in seventh. That means Cardiff need only one point against Hull to seal their play-off spot.

They can, however, leapfrog Nottingham Forest, who are in fifth. They need to better Forest's result, as they are level on points, to achieve fifth place.

If Cardiff lose and Swansea win, it would see the Welsh capital city club lose out on a top-six spot.

Betting odds

Cardiff City win - 4/11

Draw - 15/4

Hull City win - 13/2
