Fans in stadiums: Prime Minister Boris Johnson says supporters could return in October

BBC

Friday 17th July 2020

Fans could be able to return to stadiums in the UK from October, says Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Pilots will take place from 1 August but any stadium reopenings would be subject to coronavirus guidelines.

Some sports, including football and cricket, have resumed behind closed doors after the Covid-19 lockdown.

"We will pilot larger gatherings in venues like sports stadiums with a view to a wider reopening in the autumn," said Johnson on Friday.

"From October, we intend to bring back audiences in stadiums.

"Again, these changes must be done in a Covid-secure way, subject to the successful outcome of pilots."

I have strong views on whats safe and whats not, stadiums won't be safe with the wind blowing the virus about while people shout, this is too soon IMO, but lets see what happens to the numbers between now and then?

My personal opinion is this is too soon.

Still fully expect there to be another spike in the autumn, obviously I hope I'm wrong.

Theres a balancing act between safety and survival of footy clubs? Yes can wait until it appears safe but does anyone know when that is? If empty stadiums go on much into next season clubs will go to wall no doubts about that... considering the extent lockdown as been eased in England there is not an overly extensive rise in corvid cases if at all, spikes yes but thats all over world too! As long as virus has been stable until then why not open up stadiums got to do it sometime ..

The best thing to do at the moment whilst deaths and numbers are low is to have one last lockdown for a month to totally wipe it from the country. That includes a ban on ALL international travel and holidays abroad until next year. Set times and dates for shopping and facemasks everywhere outside the house.

Then we can open back up safely around October and let people in the grounds knowing that it is safe and just wait until the rest of the world catches up.

If we keep going the way we are then we will end up in another long lockdown with thousands of deaths.

Personally I dont believe it is safe to travel to mainland Spain, Greece and Italy and they are doctoring/not reporting true numbers to get people back to improve there economy not because its safe to do so. Some of the islands may be covid free at the moment but that won't last long.

Clubs will only go to the wall if players refuse to help by reducing wages properly . Most have been a disgrace through this whilst most of the world is suffering and making sacrifices they have done pretty much nothing to help out imo

Agree but problem is you cannot cut wages enough to make clubs viable with very little or no income anyway... it's ok for big clubs but championship and below matchday income is critical for survival.. you mustn't forget clubs employ more than just players city probably employ over 100 ful time staff once furlough ends by October who's going to pay them? If 1st team squad took only 5k a week instead of 10k+ each that's 100k a week that's the problem...

Have to say that all makes sense to me and I concur...!

I am fully aware that they are expecting another 'spike' in the disease around mid-October to early November and plans are already in place (as they should be) to deal more effectively this time, so why put people at risk in the meantime? :?

What happens if no serious spike by Oct It's not only football that needs customers! Do you say ok wait until dec just to make sure or do you risk putting people in stadiums and see if get spike then? Unfortunately you cannot wait forever to do something like put people in stadiums or theatres..... well you can but then thats end of lots theatres and football clubs and many more businesses sporting or otherwise...

That's were clubs need to think outside of the box. They now have huge spaces in stadiums for advertising , they can sell season tickets for home and away games online, they can still sell merchandise like replica shirts. This is where commercial departments should earn there money.

It all starts with player wage reductions though not deferalls because without that it's impossible for some clubs to survive .

Well if no fans in stadiums no advertising and who's going to see it other than fans watching on tv then exposure is minimal.. but your right players need to take pay cut but pfa have steadfastly told players refuse that even though they know clubs will fold.... with due respect replica shirt and other merchandise sales is very limited and comes nowhere near being sufficient to pay players even 5k a week.. but will say once things are back and running someone as got to have the balls to bring in a wage cap other sports have done it successfully. But premier league could be a problem implementing cap in championship due to inflated wages there.

It wouldnt be for fans in the stadium its for fans watching online and on TV.

One of the most talked about parts of all this has been the stands, Peter whittinghams banner has been wide seen, the fans faces on the seats at other clubs, commemorative flags of legends who have died recently, the giant flags fans have left on seats. Thats proof that advertising works on screen and companies would pay a lot of money to have there brand across massive areas like that all over tv. Season ticket sales are actually pretty much nothing to a club. 15k season tickets at £400 each is only £6million a year. Last years wage bill was £46million.
Sponsorship and tv revenue is what keeps clubs going.

I see it as either players take a payout in the coming years or football will collapse.

'Not sensible' to reopen sport stadiums in Wales
It would not be sensible to reopen sport stadiums to the public yet, the First Minister Mark Drakeford has said.

Earlier, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced stadiums in England could start to reopen from October.

The move could have implications for Welsh clubs like Cardiff City and Swansea City who play in the English Football League.

But Mr Drakeford said the Welsh Government "haven't had discussions yet about bringing large crowds of people back together".

"It wouldn't be sensible to be doing that," he said.

"I think we're learning today that the UK government intends to pilot the possibility of bringing crowds back to stadiums, and I've spoken to [Cabinet Office minister] Michael Gove about that this morning, and reached an agreement that we will learn with from the results of those pilots."

Mr Drakeford stressed it was how people arrive at stadiums that poses the greatest concern.

"It's not the stadium itself or the organisation inside the stadium that may be the issue," he said.

"It will be how people get to the stadium, how they behave on the way in, how crowds gather around the stadium when things are going on inside the stadium where it's all very carefully and tightly organised."

Ffs what a prick he is becoming he is using England as a testing ground before deciding what he does , safe in the knowledge if it goes wrong he can get on his toilet and say I was right? Said this is what hes doing months ago and now it proves it... he is a bottler and not fit to lead our country he prefers others to take the risks but derides them in meantime for making decisions in getting people out to work ect :banghead:

As proven on a daily basis by Mr Drakeford.
