Of course the methods are different but the 2 scenarios aren't that dissimilar. It's a removal of a statue depicting two controversial figures.
A statue depicting a woman performing, to some people, a black supremacy gesture. With many citing the gesture as promoting and glorifying black on white racism. A person who is involved in the BLM organisation which has fuelled racial tensions globally and has been accused of attempting to start a race war and civil unrest.
A statue of a man who made his fame and money buying and selling black slaves. Which some people for years in Bristol have claimed is glorifying the slave trade and white on black racism. A man who had a hand in ruining the lives of over 80,000 people and a trade which not only stole people from their families but killed and tortured millions.
Both are contentious people.
There was outrage at both the protesters illegally removing the Colston statue and when statues were removed legally by local officials. People were also up in arms when various statues were stated as being planned for removal.
I don't blame the council for taking it down, it was placed there illegally and improperly and very easily could've caused serious harm. I would be very interested to see people's opinions though if Bristol Council returned and erected this statue with the correct safety standards though.
In my personal opinion neither statue should be still standing or should be returned to the plinth. Get them in a museum and chuck up a tree or a bench.

Well I suppose opinions differ. I’d say the similarities are there and it’s been interesting to see the praise the removal of this statue has had (and not because people were worried of the safety standards violations) compared to the anger people had at Colstons being taken down.

i read on another thread a poster saying something about the mental gymnastics some will go through... think he must have read this thread because making any sort of case for randoms erecting statues in City centers is really mind blowing is it not ?
