Thursday 16th July 2020

Are Millwall and Swansea the only real challengers left in the mix?

NEIL HARRIS:

"I think as games run out and you have got teams between you and certain teams in the league.

"It’ll be difficult for Preston and Bristol City to catch us or the teams above. There is always a chance so you never know.

"We are there to be shot at, at the moment, in sixth, we have teams behind us desperate for that slot."

NEIL HARRIS:

A wonderful opportunity ahead

"How am I personally? Excited. Loving it. Challenging times, of course, because of the importance of games. The magnitude is huge.

"We have got ourselves in a good position and I enjoyed my team’s performance against Derby."

What shape the squad was in when you inherited it?

NEIL HARRIS:

"To gain promotion to the Premier League to where they were when he took over is one hell of an achievement.

"I came into the job because things weren’t going the way the club liked. The same with Gary Rowett at Millwall when he took over.

"99% of the time it’s not going smoothly. But big boots to follow and I’ve enjoyed the challenge.

"He sent me a text to wish me all the best and I sent him a text the other week when he took over at Boro."

NEIL HARRIS:

Is it difficult wanting Millwall to lose?

"No. I’m Cardiff City manager, I want to win.

"I want to be a successful manager. I had a good career because I want to be a winner.

"To be involved in the game as long as we have, they stay in it because of the mentality.

"It’s not about Millwall losing games, it’s about my team getting more games than the teams around us.

"I want to be successful and want sixth spot."

NEIL HARRIS:

How well do you know Neil Warnock and what did you make of him getting the Middlesbrough job?

"I don’t know Neil really well. You can do nothing but admire the success he has had.

"My immediate attention to Cardiff City, he did wonderfully-well here.

"Surprised he has popped up? I don’t think we’d ever be surprised. His love for football is huge.

"It’s romantic for you guys, it’s a great storyline to have the ex-manager in the way of Cardiff. But for us, it’s just another game of football."

Could a fifth place finish be on the cards?

NEIL HARRIS:

"Yeah, anything is possible in those regards when there are points to play for. Just look at the Wigan-Hull game 8-0, no one is expecting to see that at this stage of the season.

"Can we catch Forest? Of course we can, because of the points on offer and the gap between us, but we have tough games ahead and we're just focusing on Boro at the moment."

NEIL HARRIS:

On Boro's poor record at the Riverside Stadium

"You don’t want to tempt fate. It’s a stat we are aware of but it’s going to be a tough game.

"They are still scrapping, mathematically. They can still be caught and relegated, even if 50 points often means you’re safe.

"It’s going to be a tough challenge. We have got to be at our best again."

NEIL HARRIS:

On his side's promotion aims

"We’ve got experience of gaining promotion at different levels. I’ve had two campaigns myself, getting to two finals as a manager.

"The staff have had success and the players have had success of promotion too.

"I would fancy us, yes, we are competing against three talented sides, whoever they might be.

"We are not getting too far ahead of ourselves. We had a positive against Derby but we need a good result against Boro."

NEIL HARRIS:

On his former colleagues at Millwall

"You have contacts with certain individuals, staff. I get on very well with Gary Rowett as well.

"Sometimes it’s tough because I want to win, I want to be in sixth spot. So it’s not always easy having those conversations."

NEIL HARRIS:

Harris on the substitution laws

"When I was asked by the LMA what I thought, the nine subs on the bench definitely makes sense.

"It’s a squad game. You have 20, 21, 22, 23, why not include them on match day and save disappointment.

"Jumping from five subs to three. I wasn’t fussed on five, maybe four. It is what it is. I think going to four from three is sensible.

"The game is getting quicker and quicker and sport science is becoming more paramount. My preference would be four instead of five."

NEIL HARRIS:

How have you found football post lockdown and what has surprised you?

"Managing workloads, players’ mentality, I thought there’d always be a little bit of a swing, starting slowly then coming back into it.

"The games have got quicker and more consistent over the course of 90 minutes.

"Fewer mistakes in the games than there were in the first few games, but I just think there is a fatigue element in the first few games.

"We have had seven league games now in a short space of time. Some are making four or five changes, some are not making any."

NEIL HARRIS:

Will experience come into it?

"Yeah of course it does. Experience of big-game mentality. Experience after 44 games is vital for my staff and the players.

"But we have got to get there first.

"It’s about the right mentality and game plan and against Derby they had that."

NEIL HARRIS:

What have been the key moments for you at Cardiff so far?

"Sometimes key moments come in adversity as well as success.

"Coming from 3-0 down at Leeds with 10 men. Losing 6-1 to QPR on New Year’s Day, I learned a lot about my team that day as well.

"You have to look at the good things and the bad things. I’ve made mistakes and it’s about not replicating those mistakes.

"I tend to look forward more than back, so it’s about the next game. As soon as you finish one it’s about the next one."

NEIL HARRIS:

How are the squad, including Lee Tomlin?

NEIL HARRIS:

"Tommo was excellent the other night, really good. He has not trained, so we will have to see how he is tomorrow, that’s my honest assessment.

"He is a lad with a big heart and a big desire to play in this game.

"Barring Lee there are a few knocks and niggles but barring that we are in pretty good health."

NEIL HARRIS:

What do you do when other teams in the promotion mix are playing?

"I did have Brentford v Preston on the telly and on the laptop I tuned in to Nottingham Forest TV and watched Forest v Swansea!

"I watched Sol Bamba on Sky Sports News as well!

"I’m just interested in watching how teams play."

Re: NEIL HARRIS:

Given the ferocious nature of professional sport it would be wrong to suggest Neil Warnock has mixed feelings ahead of Cardiff City's Championship clash with Middlesbrough this weekend.

His focus is on acquiring the one point, at least, Boro require to avoid relegation.

After that, however, nothing will give Warnock greater satisfaction than to see Cardiff smash Hull in their final game and rampage through the play-offs into the Premier League.

Cardiff City Football Club are delighted to announce that three players from the Academy have now signed professional contracts.

Kieron Evans, Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies have put pen-to-paper on new deals that will see them link up with Steve Morison’s U23 squad for the 2020/21 season.

All three of our new professionals progressed through Cardiff City's Academy system from a young age.

Lee Tomlin's Warnock dig

It was no coincidence that Tomlin's scorching form coincided with a very positive start to life under Harris. One is left wondering just how Warnock's final few months would have panned out if he had utilised his ace in the pack a little more often.

Tomlin, however, offered a little insight into life under Warnock during a searingly honest press conference back before Christmas.

"For me, deep down, you knew you weren’t getting picked," Tomlin said.

"There was always an excuse against me. That’s fine, everyone has got their own opinions.

"It’s not for me to argue with people, I feel like people listen to the reasons why. Not fit, not this, not that.

"If that’s what people want to believe because that’s what the gaffer said then that’s fine. I know myself, you can’t get unfitter by losing two stone. That’s a fact.

"I’ve worked so hard and now it’s unbelievable."

It was certainly unbelievable. Every time he shot it looked to be going in. Every reverse pass was carving open defences. It was a joy to watch.

The contract extension and his homage to the fans

It is then when murmurs of his soon-to-be-expiring contract began to worry Bluebirds fans. But Cardiff swiftly moved to put that right, with Tomlin penning a two-year extension in the New Year.

"I'm absolutely buzzing to get it done and dusted," said Tomlin.

"The fans stuck by me no matter what and I'm starting to repay them.

"I think that's why I had no intention of going anywhere else, because, for me, they've been unbelievable.

"Every time I start a game and you go out at home it brings a smile and a shiver down my spine. I just want to do well for them as well."

The words struck a chord with City fans, who felt like they had been taken on this rollercoaster of a journey with him and they were over the moon he had committed to be a Bluebird for at least two more years.

Goals against Birmingham City, West Brom and Luton Town followed, with Tomlin showing no signs of slowing down. Was he going to single-handedly drag Cardiff into the play-off spots?

Re: BREAKING NEIL HARRIS:

Thu Jul 16, 2020 3:03 pm

Did you ever think you'd be in this position when you arrived?

NEIL HARRIS:

"We hoped. That was the idea when I came in, that was the board’s vision, to come in and galvanise the group to get to the play-offs.

"No promises were made, there was a little bit of hope and belief, but it’s a good group that’s been put together and potential to do well.

"I’d have been delighted to be in the position we are now back in November. But the closer you get, the more you want something.

"It’s a winning mentality, I want to be successful."

Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock: "We were very good at Reading the other night and we want another performance.

"I think it's a similar situation to when I took over at Cardiff, it took me the best part of two years to put the team that's there now together and they are a very difficult side to beat.

"That's what's in them. I see that's how you've got to build.

"That's how we've got to build here. We've got to be stronger at the back and legs in the midfield and a bit more up front, we need a bit of everything.
