For the first time since DAVE JONES

Wed Jul 15, 2020 12:16 pm

We finally look like we have a manager who understands attacking football.

Neil Harris has been extremely brave in employing a higher-press than we should really be capable of. For me there are occassions where we were caught exposed last night on at least 3 occasions, but only one led to a goal. However, I think we created far more chances with our high-press than we conceded... :bluescarf: :ayatollah:

For me, we are going to have to get used to the roller-coaster until we get the right players in. We will win and lose more matches playing like last night, and draw far fewer. But draws in just don't cut it, particularly in the Championship.

Some of the attacking football we've been playing, even in the defeat against Blackburn, has been thrilling. Mendez, Tomlin and Glatzel have been so refreshing since the restart, all reading off the same script. There will be gaps at the back, we need someone like Ben Pearson in midfield for next season; fast, mobile, aggressive... But you can see that we have a tactically flexible squad, and have to say, I couldn't believe what I was seeing when we went 3-5-2 and killed Derby off completely.

Great point about having a tactically flexible squad which could prove the Ace up our sleeve. :ayatollah:

Correctamundo :thumbright: :laughing6:

Harris seems more tactically flexible than Jones, I think he knows how to set a team up to defend, but is better at getting us on the front foot than previous managers.

I rate Warnock/Mackay far higher than Jones in a number of ways. But for romantic, attacking football the Jones era was fantastic. There is no excuse though as to how he couldn't get us promoted with Bellamy, Bothroyd and Chopra.

Differences of Jones to Harris:
Harris is far more fan and media savvy.
Harris appears to be more tactically aware.
We press far more aggressively under Harris than Jones.

We just need to see what he will do with a full, albeit limited transfer window. :bluescarf:

Tony

I was really worried after the 6-1 mullering against QPR, when we played a back 5, that this squad was not flexible enough, that certain players didn't want it enough and that our squad was too old and slow. It's like watching a different team now, Harris knows the players that fit his plans and those who don't are kept away. Peltier and Jazz Richards, Harris identified as weak links and they are gone a.s.a.p. That is good management.

Notice Josh Murphy played no part last night. He is the only player I am worried about - Harris has rejuvinated the rest of the squad :ayatollah:

I'm sorry Annis I think you're doing Dave Jones a diservice there. You can label him a nearly man if you want to look at the situation from a simplistic view however it's not that simple.

Under Dave Jones each year he managed to assemble a squad that was competing towards the top end of the table while having to sell the better players each year. Compare that to Malky who had over 10 million to spend in our promotion year.

Now I'm not knocking Malky as I believe we would have stayed up if he hadn't been sacked but to label Dave Jones a nearly man is a bit harsh considering we played some of the best football in the last 15-20 years under him and all while selling our better players.

Not much of a DJ fan but you can't complain about the football we played under him :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

Dave Jones did remarkably well, but he only had a first XI with mainly inferior players on the bench - look what happened in the playoff final against Blackpool once Bothroyd went off. We have a better overall squad now.

DJ had to give players away , managers since have had millions thrown at them.

The game has moved on since DJ's days.High press, lone striker were things only just starting to trickle down from the Prem 10-12yrs ago.I remember watching Newcastle the first time they came down in 2009 and couldn't get over how hard they worked without the ball. Now we all do it.

First time since Dave Jones? I think you are doing Warnock a massive disservice here. The season we went up we played some of the most entertaining and successful stuff I have seen at the City particularly in the first third of the season. Villa, Sheff Utd and Leeds were all games where we destroyed good sides with relentless attacking football and they were each lucky not to concede 5 or 6. And we won up at Wolves early on by going for it rather than sitting back. Warnock did tighten things up a bit more after that but that was partly due to losing both big Ken who was on fire and Gunnarson for a while.

I agree we played fantastic football at the beginning of that season, but only showed glimpses of it after that, perhaps when the pressure of being in the position we were and maybe Ken fizzling out a bit. I have confidence from what I've seen that Harris will get us playing much better football over the long-term. :thumbright:

Zahore got injured at end of October I think and he was out for about two months. We seemed to change our style as a result and I agree it was never as spectacular as before his injury. I cant complain though, it got us up!
