Monday 13th July 2020

NEIL HARRIS:

Squad fitness?

"The squad is fine."

Still in sixth, mission still the same - seven points still?

"Seven points will guarantee us sixth spot - or I’d be very surprised if it didn’t.

"With each passing match day, that number could become lower, but we just need to finish in the top six.

"Same at the bottom, there are no points tallies, just get what you need to get to achieve.

"We are in a better position now than we were on Friday morning. Another game day out of the way and we are still in pole position."

Ahead of tomorrow nights home game v Derby County

NEIL HARRIS:

"I don't think we need three wins," Harris said.

"We certainly need to win two games.

"We need an unbeaten finish if I'm honest - I'm looking at seven points as a total.

"I was delighted with 10 points from four games - I was delighted with 10 points from five games but even after lockdown we knew we had a tough run of fixtures and to win three of those games was a tough ask for the lads, but we did it early.

"We have just fallen short the last couple and now we have to get back to being on the right side of the final margins and in both penalty areas.

"We look forward to it. Don't look back now, let's look forward."

Derby are hoping to claw you back and had a loss at the weekend, will there be a desperation for them to win?

"Yeah, a lot of risk and reward, just like when Blackburn Rovers came to us. We understand that.

"There is an element to some teams that they have to win games of football.

"Derby have some talented players, just like others in the top 10 in this division.

"We have to make sure we are on our game to deal with their threats, like Wayne Rooney, for example."

NEIL HARRIS:

Happy birthday for yesterday - spend it looking at results?

Time for Neil Harris' press conference then. It was his birthday yesterday and the first question is about whether he enjoyed it?

"It was draining, wasn’t it? Bizarre situation isn’t it? Play Friday and win and you can enjoy watching the football on the weekend, lose and you are waiting on other people.

"You want to win games and take care of our own business and not worry about what other people are doing.

"Winning mentality says you are still relying on other people and we are still in sixth place."

Tue 14 July - Cardiff City vs. Derby County 7:45pm

Sat 18 July - Middlesbrough vs. Cardiff City 15:00

Wed 22 July - Cardiff City vs. Hull City

Can you believe you are in the position you are with Swansea just behind you?

NEIL HARRIS:

"You’ve got two very good teams in a tough division.

"Three games to go, the team that finishes in sixth deserves to be there.

"Whether we get 68 or 71 points to be in the playoffs, you deserve to be where you finish.

"Exciting for both Welsh clubs’ fan bases to be where they are.

"Myself and my counterpart at Swansea understand that.

"I just try and relax and focus the players."

NEIL HARRIS:

Wayne Rooney, you can’t deny the difference in their results before and after they joined?

"When you put a player of that quality into the team it’s going to make you into a better football club.

"I don’t think the players need reminding of his ability. He has captained his country for so long.

"He’s a part of the way they play in the way they want to pass the ball. Possession-based, very patient in their build up and they have had success doing it.

"We have to make sure we are better with the ball. The disappointment on Friday was that against a good pressing side we could have had more composure in the first half."

NEIL HARRIS:

Recovery must be so difficult, anyone going on the pitch 100% at the moment?

"Today was probably our first training day in a few weeks.

"By that I mean a day getting messages across, doing structural work rather than basic drills. We did some organisation stuff today.

"It’s been about recovery. Making sure the lads are fresh but at a level to compete in the Championship, but it’s the same for every team."

NEIL HARRIS:

This is what you signed up for?

"This is why I came to Cardiff City. It’s why it’s such an appealing job.

"We are at the right end of the division trying to get in the Premier League.

"We have had to work very hard to get where we are. We have got a chance now to get back on track, that’s the message to everybody.

"We have to get back on an unbeaten run and that starts against Derby."

NEIL HARRIS:

Are you a what-if man? That Blackburn defeat?

"We can all say that. Steve Cooper, last-minute goal against Leeds, he will be saying what-if?

"What if the referee actually gave us a penalty for a change?

"Games are coming thick and fast and it’s always about the next game.

"It’s winning the next game mentality. The tactics, mentality etc."

Re: NEIL HARRIS:

NEIL HARRIS:

You look relaxed?

"Looks can be deceiving sometimes!

"I came to Cardiff City because I wanted to be in this situation.

"My fifth full season as a manager. Last year was slightly different at the other end of the table but every year there has been something to play for.

"At the moment, I’m just really enjoying it. I want to win and I want to be in the play-offs, but as long as I do what I think is right and do my due diligence, put the man hours in, then I’m comfortable.

"It’s brilliant to work with the lads and we have to help each other."

NEIL HARRIS:

Any spies from family on social media?

"Oh yes, of course. When you don’t follow it yourself, you have to!

"We follow it as a club for their protection. My children are on social media, they are much better at things like that than me.

"I’ve been told about this and that and asked if it’s all OK.

"But it’s just not for me."

Re: NEIL HARRIS:

NEIL HARRIS:

Do you need to change things up more? Other opportunities?

"Of course. First thing you do is look at yourself and see if you’ve picked the right team.

"It’s always hindsight with team selection. I pick a team based on what I see on the training ground and the opponent.

"Sometimes we might tweak things but I don’t like wholesale changes and never have done, but you do need a freshness.

"Some players just go game after game and others need to be rotated. They don’t always like it but that’s what best for the team.

"Who’s fit, who’s trained, who’s right for the opponent and who is right for us. So you will see the team tomorrow night."

Cardiff City boss makes play-off points prediction ahead of Derby County clash

Derby County news: Neil Harris has been discussing his side's top-six prospects ahead of a crunch test with fellow top-six chasers Derby at the Cardiff City Stadium

By Richard Cusack

Monday 13th July 2020

Cardiff City boss Neil Harris is targeting a win against Derby County in Tuesday night's showdown between the two sides.

The Bluebirds are four places ahead of Phillip Cocu's side in the Championship table and the same amount of points with only three games of the 2019-20 season remaining.

Derby have faltered, failing to win any of their last three games after opening the return of football from a lockdown imposed by the coronavirus pandemic with a trio of victories.

Cardiff, meanwhile, head into the match with Derby on the back of defeats to Blackburn Rovers and Fulham.

And former Nottingham Forest striker Harris thinks his side need to stay unbeaten and win two of their remaining matches.

After Derby, they play relegation-battling Middlesbrough and Hull City.

Tomorrow night, Derby face a Cardiff side that occupy the final play-off spot, with Neil Harris’ side sitting three points clear of the Rams in sixth place.

Phillip Cocu will be urging his side to return to winning ways against the Bluebirds, but the Dutchman has confirmed that they will have to do without Duane Holmes.

Cocu has confirmed that the midfielder will miss the trip to South Wales, after the 25-year-old missed the defeat to Brentford at the weekend.

How do you protect players against social media abuse after Ben Hamer and Wilfried Zaha this weekend?

NEIL HARRIS:

"How do you protect from social media? I don’t do it because in my line of work I’m going to get it the most as a manager.

"When you lose, you’ve picked the wrong team.

"I don’t do it.

"Do I think it’s too easy access to people? Yeah I do, but I don’t massively understand it.

"Discrimination of any sort, racial, homophobic, it’s just not accceptable, cowardly and derogatory.

"Bullying is a disgrace, more needs to be done as we go through the age of social media. It has to change, government bodies have to step forward and do more.

"A goalkeeper goes to work to do his best, Zaha goes to work to do his job. That’s the bottom line."

Do you need a rest?

SEAN MORRISON:

"I’m talking on behalf of myself and the lads, but across the country, it is tough. Not only physically, but mentally.

"We had three and a half months of nothing and we were dying to get back to it.

"I’m not going to sit here and complain. Body is tired, brain is tired, but, come tomorrow night, the whole group will be ready to go.

"Wembley is the goal, ever since the new manager came in. Once you’re in there it’s a lottery.

"If you can perform over 180 minutes and get yourself to Wembley it’s there for the taking.

"Whoever gets there earns promotion to the Premier League."
