The points total Neil Harris believes Cardiff City need from final three games to make the play-offs

The Bluebirds have lost two on a bounce and cannot afford any more slip-ups with three games to go

Neil Harris believes Cardiff City cannot lose any of their last three games if they want to secure a top-six spot.

The Bluebirds were downed 2-0 by Fulham at Crave Cottage on Friday night, their second loss in three days following their 3-2 defeat by Blackburn Rovers earlier in the week.

It means City's once-rosy buffer over the chasing pack has narrowed only to one point, with the likes of Swansea City, Preston and Derby all with a game in hand behind them.

City have a crucial six-pointer against Derby County on Tuesday, followed by a trip up to Middlesbrough to face Neil Warnock's side before a final home fixture against relegation-battling Hull City.

But if Cardiff are to make the play-offs, Harris says, they cannot afford another slip-up in their final three fixtures.

NEIL HARRIS:

"I don't think we need three wins (to make the top six)," Harris said. "We certainly need to win two games.

"We need an unbeaten finish, if I'm honest. I'm looking at seven points as a total.

"I was delighted with 10 points from four games, I was delighted with 10 points from five games., but even after lockdown we knew we had a tough run of fixtures and to win three of those games was a tough ask for the lads, but we did it early.

"We have just fallen short the last couple and now we have to get back to being on the right side of the final margins and in both penalty areas.

"We look forward to it. Don't look back now, let's look forward."

That game against Derby County on Tuesday now takes on massive importance, given they are one of the teams in the chasing pack.

The three teams behind Cardiff all have difficult fixtures this weekend - Derby face Brentford, Preston play Nottingham Forest and Swansea City welcome Leeds United - so we will have to see the lay of the land by the time Tuesday comes around.

However, Harris believes that no matter the outcome this weekend, the clash with the Rams will be season-defining for his side.

"It's a fair pressure to put ourselves under for Tuesday.

"We have to see how results fall, but Tuesday is a huge game. It will be a huge game for us and for Derby.

"Every match-day that ticks by for the whole division, the following match-day becomes more important.

"Losing two games puts more pressure on the following game and it's my job to remove that pressure and get them to enjoy it.

"We will attack the game on Tuesday night and we will enjoy it, we have enjoyed being in a position where we are looking to get in the top six.

"But my gut feeling is that Tuesday night is not necessarily a must-win, but it's certainly going to define us that we don't get beaten."

He’s looking at two home wins, and a draw away to Borough. They say a weeks a long time in Football,,,,, and this week has seen the dynamics of securing a play off place totally turned on its head.

Most of us started to believe we were going to make the play offs until these last 2 games. Just like normal Cardiff fashion the pedaste has been kicked from underneath us.

We are still favourites to pinch that last play off place as we have a better run in than our opponents. However the way I'm looking at it is if we just fail to make the play offs its will still be a good season for us as I believe we were not prepared for it and were in a right mess with the disapointment of relegation, the demise of Warnock due to the Sala death and basically a squad that was mid table Championship at its best. Lets me honest we were not looking like a play off team at all until of late were Harris was starting to get it the way he wanted it.

For me a play off spot wil be an added bonus. Yes I will be disappointed now if we fail to make them but I wont be distraught.

Theyve got Blackburn which wont be easy so a win for us leaves us with as near to winnable games you can get in championship for last two games
