Cardiff City risk losing 2017 signing for free this summer

Wednesday 8th July 2020

Cardiff City run the risk of losing Danny Ward on a free transfer this summer, as his contract runs out in July.

Danny Wards current basic wage is £20,000 a week basic, plus bonuses.

The striker has agreed to play for the Bluebirds until the end of the current campaign but is still poised to leave for nothing as it stands.

Ward, who is 28 years old, has scored seven goals in 27 games in all competitions for the Championship side this season.

He is a useful option for Neil Harris to have in his squad and has proven this past term that he has a goal in him. Therefore, losing him for free, potentially to a league rivals, would be a big blow.

Ward joined Cardiff in 2017 from Rotherham United and was part of the Neil Warnock side who won promotion to the Premier League during his first year at the club.

He is an experienced forward in the Football League having racked over 300 appearances in his career to date. He has also previously played for the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Swindon Town and Huddersfield Town in the past.

Ward offers Cardiff more depth and another dimension in attack so they need to try and agree terms with him over a contract extension. However, financial woes after Covid-19 could play a part in their ability to spend money.

If the Bradford-born forward does leave the Cardiff City Stadium this summer, there is no doubt that he could have a few clubs after him.

Harris’ men are currently sat in 6th place in the Championship with four games left of the season to play.

No big loss imo if he goes, providing we can get someone in of course :bluescarf:

dont really see any decent offers coming in for any of our players , so its a case of leaving those out of contract go to make squad places available for any new signings.

The world has changed, he won’t get 20k a week anymore. Clubs will get their power back and players will be brought back into the real world.

IMO he’s not worth 20k a week, let him go.

Yes he is not worth 20k but on much less reasonable wage if we are in championship then no brained to stay. Premiership its a a clear no as its not his level

So be it if we loose him he might be an impact player coming off the bench but i would much rather the manager to have the headache of which striker to play because they are both exellent strikers who can play from the start and make an impact rather than super sub
Ward has been here long enough to have nailed his place but he has not.

I like him but there is no way he is worth £20,000 a week paticularly in this climate. I would be amazed if any club is willing to offer him half that. The football world has changed and there is no way championship players are going to get silly money any more. Maybe offer him something like £7000 a week on a take it or leave it basis. And I am not sure if that isn't a bit to generous for a squad player.

20k a week to occasionally come off the bench to score? nah sorry not worth that at all. Maybe between 7-12k a week but even then he's injured a lot of the time and not sure if he justifies a new contract.

How do we know he's on £20k a week.? £20k pm for a Championship bench player who has played one season's worth of games in 3 years! Warnock's signing of course, sign a player from Rotherham and pay him that sort of money. If he is indeed on that income he will go, or dramatically have to reduce his wage demands. A bit like signing goalkeeper from Newport and trebling his basic to be 3rd choice. I think if Ward is actually less than that figure he is more likely to agree a new deal, but still on reduced wages.

I think the poster above has hit the nail on the head, the clubs have the power now. There will be so many out of contract players this summer and clubs will not want to pay ultra high wages . In this case City could probably sign two players for the same wages. That's why Ward, Connolly , Bogle and Richards will struggle to find clubs if their wage demands are based on what they were getting at City.

Like others have said, 20k is far too much, poss 10 - 12k with bonuses to bump it up.

I like Danny Ward but hasn't established himself as starter in many years at the club.
