Lee Tomlin is a blue....

By Glen Williams

Monday 6th July 2020

As sure as Danny Ward was to slot that chance, Lee Tomlin was going to be the man to find that eye of the needle pass.

Tomlin didn't train on Friday, he had a tightness in his groin and hip, something that has flared up from time to time throughout the season, so he had to settle for a place on the bench.

But when a game is at 0-0 and you have Lee Tomlin on the bench, you have always got a chance.

He was stuck out on the left wing and, at times, looked a little frustrated. But he needed only one chance and the weight of that pass through to Ward made the striker's chance a whole lot easier.

Many Bristol City fans feared him heading into the tie, firstly because of just how well he has done this season and also because, having been a Robin for 18 months years previously, they have seen first hand just what he can do.

One photo perfectly summed up Tomlin's allegiances, though, the smile lighting up his face when he saw Ward's rocket fly past the Robins goalkeeper. That showed that, as the song goes, Lee Tomlin really is a blue and has been the instigator-in-chief for everything good in attack this season.

Cardiff fans will hope that he is fit enough to start from the off on Tuesday, because, as our columnist Nathan Blake says, having him warming the bench is like having that million-dollar chip and not cashing it in.

If he's not 100% fit it would be daft playing him from the start and risking a pull or strain which could rule him out for important games to come.

The starting midfield have been doing fine up to now and if we just give Tomlin 15 to 20 minutes at the end of games until he's up to full fitness than I have no problem with that.

Would hate to lose him by playing him too much especially with the games coming thick and fast at the moment.

Agree with above. He can have more of an impact against a tired defence with less risk to him. We know what he can do so we can pick tactics and approaches to suit.

I was one of the many who slated him when he came back hugely overweight, but also gave him credit when he returned fitter than ever ! As you say though,a real footballer for sure, his vision for that killer pass will be essential from here on in,I agree with him coming on with say 30 mins left,Harris has said he isn't 100%,so far it's working for him,and the team being Brought on against a tiring team, his pass, and the finish from ward was top drawer, great vision by both, and with Glatzel, and Murphy to come back,we seem to have partnerships forming up top, which is a big change from where we were, and the style we were playing, and great to see.ward made that run in the knowledge tomlin would provide the perfect ball. :old: :bluebird:

I slated Tomlins attitude many times

And still do, hes an athlete on superb money he should be fit, slim on top of his game week in week out

But he has some talent, he has that vision not many possess

But I'd only play him & ward for last 20/25 of games

When he starts I feel he tries badly.
