Dion Sanderson blossoming in attack
Monday 6th July 2020
For those who have watched Dion Sanderson since his move to Cardiff City Stadium, it is difficult to believe his preferred position was at centre back before making the switch.
For Wolves' youth teams, the 20-year-old has largely been employed on the right of a back three, while only occasionally moving out to the right wing back position.
But we can now see just how much he has learnt in that position in the six games he has played for the Bluebirds.
For a while, Sanderson looked like the most likely player to score, firing shots off from range at will, something which he wasn't doing at the start of his tenure with the Bluebirds.
He is blossoming and gaining confidence with each passing game and has also been afforded a licence to get forward.
It's been a breath of fresh air following years of Lee Peltier and Bruno Manga, both of whom are of course terrific players but far more defensive-minded.
It's wonderful to see a youthful, exuberant right back bombing up and down the right flank, adding to the City attack and using his pace to quash attacks in a scramble defence. Although a few wingers have just caused him a little trouble in recent matches, as Callum O'Dowda did at Ashton Gate, so that is something which might need addressing.
But, on the whole, he has been an excellent find and is a player who Cardiff need to do everything in the power to keep next season, no matter which division they find themselves in.

Good player and a great prospect but his defending at times gives me palpitations!

I agree. Seems to make at least one howler per game but so far it hasn't cost us.
Would love him to stay next season and continue his development with us - looks like he could be quite a player!

My thoughts too.
I think we may have an outside chance of getting him on loan again if the club push for it. He’s doing relatively well and seems to be progressing here which I imagine his parent club want.

Totally agree.
I think my heart genuinely stopped during the Preston game when he was sliding and falling all over our box.

I think he's a decent player and I think he'd benefit from having another season or 2 in the championship with us as he's still young and learning yet prone to the odd mistake. I do find it funny how he was being linked with West Ham as he's still quite a way off being Premier League standard imo.

I agree that we should try to bring him on loan next season but he is still a long way from being good enough for the Premier League. Next season we should also put Paterson to right back his position for Hearts and Scotland as competition and sign another proper striker to compete with Glatzel and Ward.

Paterson isn't a right back that's been converted. its the opposite , he played his junior football as an attacking midfielder/ striker.. and was signed by and debuted by Hearts as an attacking midfielder/ striker .. and never played for us as a right back...

You’re wrong he played for Hearts and Scotland mostly as a right back, Warnock said he couldn’t defend so played him further up the field as he already had two right backs! He’s not really a centre forward so why not move him back to right back/ utility player to save us some money!

He's clearly not a right back and he doesn't want to play there - he's openly admitted that before.
I also read that Paterson was initially an attacking midfielder/striker as a child and then got converted to right-back. Not sure though, can't find a solid source anywhere.
