Danny Ward showed why he deserves another contract

By Glen Williams

Monday 6th July 2020

Football's finances are being hit up and down the country, indeed all over the world, so you can perhaps forgive Cardiff City for being cautious when it comes to renewing contracts.

We have seen Omar Bogle, Matthew Connolly and Jazz Richards all leave the club last week, but there is a reason they wanted Danny Ward there for the rest of the season and he showed that against Bristol City.

As Joe Ralls said, there is no other player he would have wanted to see presented with that 85th-minute chance at Ashton Gate.

Ward brings something which no other player brings at Cardiff City and that is a killer instinct in front of goal.

The Bluebirds have three options up front: Callum Paterson, Robert Glatzel and Danny Ward.

All three offer something very different.

Paterson is abrasive and powerful, he wears down the defenders and gives the midfield and wingers a platform from which they can pounce.

Glatzel is trying to learn that side of the game while also proving he can finish and make his own chances.

Ward is a sharpshooter who needs no second invitation to polish off chances. He can also hit purple patches, too, which is an added bonus.

Neil Harris was coy when I asked him whether this new, possession-based, passing style of football would suit Ward more than the other strikers, but it stands to reason that it will.

The more quality chances Cardiff create with a slickness of passing and cleverness of movement will only serve to benefit a striker with Danny Ward's remarkable finishing ability.

As Lee Tomlin said: City, get that deal over the line!

Lee Tomlin is a blue....

Monday 6th July 2020

As sure as Danny Ward was to slot that chance, Lee Tomlin was going to be the man to find that eye of the needle pass.

Tomlin didn't train on Friday, he had a tightness in his groin and hip, something that has flared up from time to time throughout the season, so he had to settle for a place on the bench.

But when a game is at 0-0 and you have Lee Tomlin on the bench, you have always got a chance.

He was stuck out on the left wing and, at times, looked a little frustrated. But he needed only one chance and the weight of that pass through to Ward made the striker's chance a whole lot easier.

Many Bristol City fans feared him heading into the tie, firstly because of just how well he has done this season and also because, having been a Robin for 18 months years previously, they have seen first hand just what he can do.

One photo perfectly summed up Tomlin's allegiances, though, the smile lighting up his face when he saw Ward's rocket fly past the Robins goalkeeper. That showed that, as the song goes, Lee Tomlin really is a blue and has been the instigator-in-chief for everything good in attack this season.

Cardiff fans will hope that he is fit enough to start from the off on Tuesday, because, as our columnist Nathan Blake says, having him warming the bench is like having that million-dollar chip and not cashing it in.

I suspect that Ward will only be offered a new contract if we fail to get promotion.

That goal Saturday was the best goal we have scored in ages.

Ward is more of an attacker than anything we have. I think he is more of a starter than come of the bench impact player. We should be looking at keeping him

Every time I've seen him start he looks clueless

and I was one of the ones slating Warnock for not starting him.

But last 20 of a game hes sharp.
