Fernhabche v Galatasary Turkish football

Sat Jul 04, 2020 7:32 pm

Just watched a documentary on Turkish Football.
Unbelievable
Don't get me wrong. the violence is mental.
The passion and sense of belonging is intense.
Their stadiums are electric.
Our stadiums are in comparison are boring for about 70 per cent of the game.
Is there a will to change this or shall we accept the status quo?

My 2nd team are besiktas,as my turkish friends team is cardiff  have had the good fortune to attend a few Istanbul derbies over the 25 years we have been friends, and agree 100% on all you say,the atmosphere at most games is like the one we had v leeds, hostile doesn't suffice as a description :o but yeah the sense of being part of your teams family is palpable overy there!! Absolutely bonkers they are  :old: :bluebird:

My best mate is Turkish although now he is a British citizen. He is from Instanbul and I have visited the place with him where I met his football mates.

Then Instanbul was a run down city where most felt the only going thing they had for them was their football. That formula does bring out the passion as described in the OP post. Reminds me of Cardiff in the early 70s.

We both been followers of City for 40 years me and you more (being 65 years older than me)
Do you think Leeds was the most hostile game you been at with Cardiff ??

Jack's, Millwall, wirzols, Newport back in the 80s, spurs, chelsea, stoke, wolveshave all been feisty but for me Leeds was pure hate and hostile.

All of the above agreed, but for me yeah, that leeds game was the most electric atmosphere and full of hostility, can still see the look on some of the leeds players faces, they f@cking shat themselves! Hang on mate,65 years more  that makes me well over 100 :laughing5: but the games in Istanbul, besiktas v galatasary,v fenerbahce,I must say,it's the norm there! It is a full day out, from early morning till early morning, fans in the streets well before the game starts, and have only witnessed one night game around 18 years ago,all I could keep saying was WOW! Brilliant fans though,no doubt.it's very political these days though. :old: :old: :bluebird:

Hah I bet you look 10 years younger than me, I've aged 20 years in the last9 with my boys antics.

I would like to do one in Turkey one day and possibly the Milan derby.

Yes I agree, I've seen hatred in many of our games but that day it was just pure evil.

My best game I think, QPR play off is a close second.

Mate,if you could make one of the derbies in Istanbul, you will have your eyes widened  they are fanatics to put it mildly, and although you detest Islam, you will find great hospitality there too.the only problem you will face, will be which team you are backing!! The grounds hold 42, 50 + 52k for the big three, yet the current leaters ground only holds 17/500! (Istanbul besekisehir) and are backed by erdogan and his political party!! So one of the big derbies is my recommendation to you, will be a full house at any of the stadiums too  but you can visit all the grounds in a day if you wished ,but who goes to Istanbul for the day eh? There are some superb stadia in the country to visit, but being biased, for me the Vodafone arena (Besiktas jk) has a special place in my heart, plus it's a fabulous 42,000 arena, and looks stunning when rammed, nothing like it here, excluding Liverpool winning first title in 30 years, nothing like it otherwise.I'm off to turkey next july (hopefully  ) doing three days in Istanbul, four in Izmir (at my mates home) then we will travel down to his brother (my footy brother!) in the south (bodrum)for 10 days.relaxing and catch up and shirt swapping ritual  :old: :bluebird:

Sounds absolutely fantastic, I'm definitely going to look into it. My son wants to see big derbies.

And after ours, which was disappointing it would be great for him to see derbies like the Turkish ones and the Milan derby,
British football has gone a bit stale mate, soulless even for me.

I love the passion they have for there club, it's like a religion. I miss that, and the way it's going, no swearing, no saying this that the atmosphere is not the same, almost to sterile for me,

I'm anti Islam religion but not the the people, I agree the Asian folk are generally very friendly, nice respectable, decent
Hardworking people which I can never understand why racists dont like them.

I was up in Birmingham collecting an African grey last year, it was an Asian family they were such lovely people, I said what you cooking (fat boy smelt food :D )
As I was leaving she give me a plate of it for me and my son to take home, some spicy chicken stew

Lovely gesture but no bread and butter, how bloody rude :D :D

Didnt she realise fat blokes dip atleast a loaf into a stew :ayatollah:

Turkish people are among the most hospitable I have come across. I only spent a short while in Istanbul before heading to Birecik in the east near the border with Syria. Everywhere we went [group of 9], we were met with invitations for tea by almost everyone we met. Due to time constraints, we only took up one, but what a lovely experience it was being invited into a strangers house and feeling totally safe. We also went into the Taurus Mountains where we enjoyed a fabulous few days of more local hospitality. Never seen a match there but saw us play Goztepe Izmir at NP in the Cup Winners Cup many years ago - I think we won too...

I didn't see a Derby but went to San Siro for AC Milan v Juve and the atmosphere there put the Prem to shame - incredible support for Milan even though they lost 0-2 with goals from Llorente and Tevez and the local ultras were surprisingly welcoming, making sure that my young son could see and asking about the bluebirds. They never stopped smoking the weed or drinking Sambuca throughout the match too... Recommend it.

Sounds like another fabulous trip.

My son wants me to take him to a Juve game. I have said I would.

Problem is he only wants to see Ronaldo and knowing my luck id book it and he's bloody injured just as we arrive haha

Turkish games I'm gonna look at for next season, sounds like a top experience

Plus bluesince62 is paying.

Can only concur with the post above yours! Fantastic people, and very hospitable for sure,is as you say, nowhere near as sterile as the grounds here, fanatical backing for your team, even when losing ;) have you picked a team to back yet? You are correct,we beat göztepe 1-0 at np,although we lost the 1st leg 3-0 in Izmir, to go out 3-1 on aggregate :sad7: even then Goztepe had crowds pretty much the same as now,25000! This is the place my good friend was born, but moved to Istanbul aged 5,and stayed there for 30+ years before returning to live in Izmir, thus his choice of besiktas as his team, not his hometown club, although when we first met,he bragged about his hometown club beating us in the cup winners cup!! Over the years of going there (over 25!) Have been invited into so many homes, and always felt like part of their family as it's difficult to leave! Have done hot air balloon trip over cappadocia region, wow! And l cannot wait to return to turkey again, love the place. :old: :bluebird:

There are a few on youtube, real football factories I think is one and ayak takini is another, both food viewing  the 2nd one is all about turkish supporters, and is a real insight into the passion for their clubs, violence excluded, makes the fans in UK look like newbie fans  there is also another, questioning why turkey isn't a super power in football, all goof watches imo. :old: :bluebird:

Haven't picked a team yet mate, but I will. I'm gonna do some research into it and will let you know.

I'm a big fan of the underdog, plus as your paying

I do like a team that has anything to do with the eagles name. Haha

But, on a serious note I'm going to have a look into it, as it will be good for me & my boy to see a game that has so much passion and meaning again.
