Thursday 25th June 2020

NEIL HARRIS:

Harris: “Josh Murphy missed the last game, very touch and go for this weekend. It might come too soon for him.

“We look like we have come through unscathed this weekend.”

Harris on Cardiff's out-of-contract players

What was the situation with Cardiff’s out-of-contract players?

Harris: “Omar was out on loans and wanted to look for regular football. Matty had been injured for a period here and was travelling up and down from London.

“Jazz, one of the scenarios we are in with the pandemic, do you play or not? His time came to an end after a mutual decision.”

'Lots to consider' ahead of selection for Preston match

Will you be changing a winning team? Is Glatzel in contention?

Harris: “Robert Glatzel coming on, Mendez-Laing, Marlon Pack all came on and did unbelievably well.

“Another team who are physical, nasty, have got running ability. It’s one game at a time so you have to focus on it.

“Will all my players be able to play eight games in 27 days? Probably not. Possibly goalkeepers and centre halves maybe.

“Lots to consider into the team selection. We used 16 players at the weekend and there were solid performances.”

Harris weighs on on right-back depth

Are you a little bit short at right back?

Harris: “Dion has come in and done extremely well. We have got Joe Bennett and Brad Smith as left-back options and I’d have no problem at all playing either of them at right back.

“Leo Bacuna has played there over the years too.”

Preston match 'will be a close encounter'

Have Cardiff started better than Preston?

Harris: “Well yeah, results speak for themselves. Having watched Preston’s game against Luton they deserved a point, if not three.

“Eight games left and a goal separates the two teams and it will be a close encounter on the weekend.”

'We want to carry on building momentum'

Does it get closer?

Harris: “There’s nothing between us. It’s so close. Two very well matched teams and physical teams who work hard.

“Alex Neil has been there and done a brilliant job. We want to carry on building momentum.

“We felt we should have won the game against Brentford, beat Barnsley, had a three-month break and picked up where we left off at Leeds.

“It counts for nothing, now, Leeds, though.”

Cardiff to fly to Manchester for match

What are the travel plans?

Harris: “Everywhere seems a decent trek from Cardiff!

“We are going to fly. The EFL say if it’s possible to fly with social distancing then please do so.

“We have an airport 20 minutes from the stadium so we are going to fly to Manchester.

“We understand the travel arrangements and it’s not ideal changing in bar areas or press rooms. We are all getting our heads around it.

“Hotels will be weird, just confined to your rooms.

“Early kick-off helps, breakfast and off to the game.”

'Clubs will fear us moving forward'

Is there a psychological advantage this weekend?

Harris: “With eight games to go you want all the points you can get. We put ourselves right in the mix last weekend.

“We made a statement last weekend and clubs will fear us moving forward.

“There will be winners and losers this weekend and it’s about being the most consistent team over a period of time.”

Future travel arrangements

On flying, are you going to fly quite often? Is it a bonus not travelling on a coach?

Harris: “What I’m learning at the moment is not to plan too far in advance.

“Flying somewhere like Middlesbrough would be an ideal scenario.

“Preston, flying to and from there is the quickest and safest way to go. We are going to use it as trial and error.

“Swansea went to Boro by plane and worked well for them.”

'It's my first visit to Preston as Cardiff manager, it's a clean slate'

There’s an awful record at Deepdale, do you believe in those things?

Harris: “That’s not something for me to focus on. It’s always nice for the press!

“I always look at it when I’m in charge, it’s my first visit to Preston as Cardiff manager, a clean slate.

“It’s about having a game plan and executing them. A bit of luck as well and carrying that momentum, not history of results.”

NEIL HARRIS:

'Is the unknown a bit daunting? I don’t think it is'

Last week was a home match, this week is away, how much harder is that?

Harris: “Until we get there we don’t know. Is the unknown a bit daunting? I don’t think it is.

“We do fly to some places and get on coaches, but we are usually getting there in the same manner (as before).

“They get up in the morning, eat and go to the game.

“We went to Cheltenham for a friendly a few weeks ago. We took our cars individually and got changed in the bar there.

“It worked great and the lads got on with it.

“That’s how I see it and that’s the mentality the players have got here.”

'I know the boys want it - they have come back hungry'

Last week, what did you learn about your team?

Harris: “Focus and desire within the group.

“I knew it had been there during lockdown.

“I know the boys want it. They have come back hungry to do well.

“After a long time out, to focus and deliver a game plan like we did. Credit to the players, I thought we looked fit as well.”

NEIL HARRIS:

Football is an 'important part of morale in society'

Positive coronavirus tests show there is a danger out there...?

Harris: “It does very much.

“It serves as a little reminder to us of how fortunate we are to enjoy the roles we provide.

“It’s an important part of morale in society.

“Last week we paid tribute to Peter Whittingham and the good work the NHS do and the people who lost their lives through Covid-19.

“The three positive tests do serve as a reminder and people who are forgetting that are wrong.

“We have seen so much good work done, Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, we have got to give something back.”

NEIL HARRIS:

Harris: 'We don’t feel the pressure at the moment'

Is it harder defending a place in top six or chasing one down?

Harris: “It becomes a mentality thing.

“Is there pressure or expectation? We don’t feel the pressure at the moment. Yes there is expectation because we are a big club and were in the Premier League last season, but we were not given a chance halfway through the season.

“We have shown it, beating Forest away, West Brom at Home, Leeds at home. We have shown we can do it.

“We went from eighth to 11th to seventh and that will happen. It will go to the wire.

“It’s exciting, that’s why the Championship is a wonderful league to be involved in.

“Every fixture this weekend has got something on it. We want to be in there (top six). We could be sixth on Saturday or back down in 11th again.

“We have to make sure we are stable.”

Praise for Vaulks

With Will Vaulks, the old manager is out of the picture, what has he done for you and what have you got out of him?

Harris: “It’s not about the new manager or the old manager.

“I’ve given him an opportunity, like every player. Most have had appearances under me, just seeing who played well and good in combinations.

“Will has come in and found a passing range, he can be a goal threat and we have got to find different ways to win games and score goals.

“If we have to be a bit more pragmatic without transfer windows, try to get over the line in games, his long throw-ins, competitive edge.

“Aggressive, good on first balls and second balls. He is good in both boxes, throw-ins and corners and good defensively.”

'Nine substitutes named on a team sheet should stay'

Verdict on the new rules, drink break, five subs:

Harris: “The nine substitutes named on a team sheet should stay.

“It’s a squad game. One, then five, then seven, now nine. Everyone is clamouring to get involved.

“Make it a 20-man squad. The drinks breaks have been important at the moment.

“I wouldn’t expect to see them staying.

“Five subs might be one to consider, we need to get through the next month or so.”

AFC Bournemouth defender Brad Smith has extended his loan spell with Cardiff City.

Bournemouth live

The Australia international made his first appearance for the Bluebirds in Sunday's 2-0 victory over Leeds, having signed on a six-month loan back in January before the football was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Smith spent the first half of the campaign with American outfit Seattle Sounders, winning the MLS Cup back in November.

The 26-year-old's contract with the Cherries has been extended until the end of the current season, enabling him to continue his loan spell in south Wales.
