Sky Sports issue warning over future of free-to-view Premier League matches

The broadcaster has committed to showing 25 matches for free on Pick TV for the remainder of the current season

Sky Sports have outlined the ways in which they will improve fan experience for Premier League matches being played behind closed doors - but have warned supporters not to expect free-to-view games to become a regular thing.

After Bundesliga matches prompted a mixed reaction from viewers due to the lack of atmosphere, the broadcaster has been working with EA Sports to produce a technology that will provide live matches with crowd noise.

Alongside that, Sky Sports have also introduced a new feature called ‘Fanzone’, which will enable viewers to video chat with friends during Premier League matches.

It is a feature that will only be available for select matches, according to Sky, but it will also allow fans to influence the crowd noise they hear during the game.

The broadcaster have also agreed to show 25 matches on its free-to-view Pick TV channel, but managing director Rob Webster warned the Financial Times that this is unlikely to become a regular occurrence in future.

“The starting point in all our discussions on rights centres around the nature of exclusivity because that is what drives our business,” he explained, pointing out the exceptional circumstances that led to games being made available for free this season.

Sky Sports have also allowed the Premier League to defer a rebate of £170m in order to help clubs facing a cash shortfall due to the coronavirus.

A lack of live sport due to the coronavirus has led to Sky Sports seeking the rebates in order to offset their own losses caused by the halt, with Webster insisting that the deals they are proposing are ‘balanced and fair’.

Webster also revealed that the vast majority of rebate negotiations were in the process of being finalised.

Analysts have argued that the financial hit from the pandemic will be such that broadcasters spend less on rights in future.

Yet Webster says it is too early to predict what may happen in the future.

“It’s too early to definitively look at how the sports market may evolve or have changed as a result of Covid-19,” he said. “We need to get through this period first, then, through a very clear lens, Sky will take a look at what the long-term investment may be for sport.”

The league campaign resumes this week, with Aston Villa taking on Sheffield United while Man City host Arsenal.

Wales stars Chris Mepham, Harry Wilson and David Brooks - all at Bournemouth - along with the likes of Tottenham's Ben Davies are among those due to return to action at club level in the top flight.

Just found an article saying he's ready to start. Looking forward to seeing him and hoping he's lost nothing during the long lay off. Huge player for Wales in the next 18 months. Hopefully good showing in the euro's and a massive boost for our world cup hopes.

Very good player and, providing he continues in the way he was playing before the injury, will be a huge player for Wales going forward.

Will get a good move if he plays as he did before the injury.
