Bolton have been relegated twice in two seasons.
Reid is currently a coach of the Scotland national team, working with Steve Clarke, but has never before been a number one.
He was in the running for the Southend job before Sol Campbell was appointed in October.
Reid completed his pro licence in 2018 and is eager for a chance as a manger, having been on the coaching staff at Crystal Palace, WBA and Reading.
It was announced two days ago that Keith Hill will leave Bolton at the end of the month when his contract expires, after the club was relegated to League Two.
