A slave trader's statue in Bristol has been torn down and thrown into the harbour during a second day of anti-racism protests across the UK.

It comes after largely peaceful demonstrations in London on Saturday ended in some clashes with police.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick urged protesters to find another way to make their views heard.

But thousands of protesters massed for a second day outside the US embassy in London before moving towards Whitehall.

Other protests have been taking place in Manchester, Wolverhampton, Nottingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

In Bristol, protesters used ropes to pull down the bronze statue of Edward Colston, a prominent 17th Century slave trader, who has been a source of controversy in the city for many years.

Colston was a member of the Royal African Company, which transported about 80,000 men, women and children from Africa to the Americas.

On his death in 1721, he bequeathed his wealth to charities and his legacy can still be seen on Bristol's streets, memorials and buildings.

After the statue was toppled, a protester posed with his knee on the figure's neck - reminiscent of the video showing George Floyd, the black man who died while being restrained by a Minnesota police officer.

The statue was later dragged through the streets of Bristol and thrown into the harbour. The empty plinth was used as a makeshift stage for protesters.

Home Secretary Priti Patel called the tearing down of the statue "utterly disgraceful", adding that "it speaks to the acts of public disorder that have become a distraction from the cause people are protesting about".

"It's right the police follow up and make sure that justice is undertaken with those individuals that are responsible for such disorderly and lawless behaviour," she said.

In a statement, Avon & Somerset police confirmed there would be an investigation into the "act of criminal damage".

Historian Prof David Olusoga told BBC News that the statue should have been taken down long before.

He said: "Statues are about saying 'This was a great man who did great things.' That is not true, he [Colston] was a slave trader and a murderer."

As you said it's criminal damage - most press have photos of the " Dumping of the Statue " from today .
Maybe the Police went for Plan B - Let them carry on - We will look at the photos and knock their door in the morning !!!

Any support that any people who are ‘on the fence’ regarding the current goings on will be pretty quickly eroded away the way these idiots are going.

Police have identified 17 potential suspects responsible for tearing down the Edward Colston statue at the Black Lives Matter protest in Bristol yesterday (Sunday).

Superintendent Andy Bennett appeared on local radio to talk about the protests.

When asked how he would feel seeing the culprits potentially appear before a court for their actions, he said police were "duty-bound" to look into it.

He told the BBC: "As a police officer, I don't get to choose which laws I uphold and which I don't. We are duty-bound to investigate this.

"We know and have identified 17 main offenders in terms of tearing it down and an investigation is underway."

Chief Constable Andy Marsh took to social media today to praise the efforts of police officers from Avon and Somerset Police, despite criticisms from the Police Federation.

He said: "We went to lengths to caution people before the protest against attending because of the risk of spreading covid but as expected people turned up and there was a crowd of over 10,000.

"Midway through the protest we saw CCTV images in our control room of protesters on top of the Colston statue. Within two minutes that statue had been pulled down.

"We had deployed officers to respond and take appropriate action but the commanders on the ground made the decision that to intervene and arrest suspects would likely have led to injuries to suspects, injuries to officers and people involved in not damaging property being drawn into very violent confrontation with police which have had serious ramifications for the city of Bristol and beyond.

I take your point entirely and some on here would do well to remember their own younger days when moaning about contemporary acts of civil disobedience. However when you talk about costing the club money in policing costs without (shall we call it the skullduggery) I'm guessing that about 60 to 70 % wouldn't have been there at all in those days. I'm guessing therefore the club made a nett gain regarding policing costs versus the much more lucrative naughty boy element of the crowd. As for away support!!!!
