Cardiff City boss Neil Harris gives key Lee Tomlin injury update ahead of Leeds United opener and outlines his tactics for play-off push

Harris' Bluebirds have nine Championship matches left as they chase the Premier League dream and there appears to be some good news about their talisman Tomlin ahead of return to action against Leeds

CARDIFF CITY FC:

Sunday 6th June 2020

Cardiff City boss Neil Harris says Lee Tomlin has a 'twinkle in his eye' as he seeks to get him back to full fitness in time for the Bluebirds planned play-off charge.

Bluebirds talisman Tomlin has produced his best football at the club since Harris took over and made him the kingpin of the side, but thought his season was over after wrecking his knee in training back in February.

But Tomlin, and the Bluebirds, are unexpected beneficiaries of the enforced break and he is back doing training drills with his team-mates ahead of Cardiff's return to action against Leeds on the weekend of June 20.

Harris stressed Tomlin still needs to go through the final stage of 'trusting his body' in a full-on game.

But he is arranging behind closed doors friendlies with local teams to prepare City for their remaining nine Championship fixtures and expects Tomlin to feature.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, another Cardiff star who thought his season was over because of a hamstring problem, will also play in those matches.

If they come through unscathed, the cutting edge and different strengths Tomlin and Mendez-Laing offer will provide the Bluebirds with a huge and unexpected double boost as they seek to soar from ninth place up into the top six by the end of the season.

Harris appears to have lost striker Isaac Vassell though, who has had a setback on a quad injury.

However, Harris still possesses a depth of squad Cardiff's play-off rivals can only look upon with envy and the manager outlined how he plans to utilise that advantage as the games come thick and fast.

On Tomlin, Harris told the club's website:

NEIL HARRIS:

"Yes he and the players have a twinkle in the eye. Those who thought they might not play a lot of football certainly see this as a bonus.

"Tommo is infectious, a great character, very good trainer. Hence why he got injured in the first place. That's what we want, our senior players to show our younger ones the way.

"He has been out a while, has to get over hurdles, mental as well as physical ones, get out onto pitch, trust your body.

"He's doing that final stage at the moment, which is one of the hardest parts you can have.

"But he's also taken part in a lot of functional drills we're doing. Tactically he's taken part, picked up messages. We have to make sure we progress him at his pace - and his pace might be slightly different, say, to someone like Gavin Whyte, who is a few years younger.

"He's back in the group and doing the majority of the work. We're hoping to get him some minutes in the friendly fixtures coming up with local sides, which is a positive."

If Cardiff can get Tomlin fit for Leeds it will be a massive plus. His mercurial brilliance in scoring one goal and impishly setting up another with a back-flick for Robert Glatzel saw the Bluebirds come back from 3-0 down at Elland Road to draw 3-3 earlier in the season.

Promotion-chasing Leeds will certainly be wary of the Tomlin factor when they head to Cardiff City Stadium for the behind closed doors return clash.

Harris also says that Mendez-Laing is getting "more minutes and miles in the legs" and will take part in the friendly XI v XI games to prepare the team properly for Leeds.

The Bluebirds are two points off Preston in sixth place and fancy their chances of a promotion charge to the Premier League via the play-offs in the coming weeks.

Crucially they have matters in their own hands, with games looming against direct play-off rivals Preston, Blackburn, Bristol City and Derby.

There is an argument for saying a number of sides above Cardiff - Nottingham Forest, Preston, Bristol City and Millwall - have punched above their weight this season, while the Bluebirds have punched below theirs.

The same can perhaps be said for Blackburn and Swansea, two other sides with the play-offs in their sights who would have been written off at the start of the campaign.

Cardiff, on the other hand, were firmly expected to mount a promotion challenge, but faltered under Neil Warnock and have yet to click properly under Harris.

However, they are hoping the unexpected stalling of the season has given them the chance to reboot, rest key players, get others fit again and hand the opportunity to utilise their bigger squad in the remaining matches.

That will involve using five quality substitutes during early games and also making wholesale changes to the starting line-up at times, ensuring fresh personnel as matches come at a relentless pace.

Outlining how he is preparing for the restart, and the team selection methods he will deploy in the unique situation, Harris said: "We'll get niggles, as every club will. It's like a pre-season period, we're trying to limit those knocks as much as we can, but also pushing the players as hard as we can.

"There is risk and reward to it. You take a little bit of risk by pushing players, but get reward at end of it with them being fitter, which will hopefully give us one or two per cent on our opponents.

"We saw with the Bundesliga the first couple of games were quite slow, with an impact from substitutes coming on and scoring goals.

"We have to get our head around it quickly, make sure we have the right productivity from players on the pitch, get the timing of the substitutions right.

"I think we'll be able to name nine people on the bench and use five of them, which we'll do, especially in the first few weeks with so much to play for, the tempo of the league and how it's so unbelievably tight at the top and the bottom.

"We'll have to be adaptable in games, so many coming in a short space of time. The squad is going to be key.

"We're talking about nine games in a five week period. That might not sound a lot, given we've been through every Saturday and midweek in the Championship. But we've just had three months off and only a three-week build-in.

"It's going to be crazy at times. I will pick a team to win a game, and then maybe change it three days after for the next one. People say Neil Harris very rarely changes a winning team, or one that has put in a good performance, but I'm going to have to adapt myself."

But he stressed: "We're really excited about what's coming up," a mood that also seems to be sweeping through the players at the club.

Neil Harris reveals how his Cardiff City squad are feeling ahead of Championship restart

By Dean Cooke

08/06/2020

Cardiff City manager Neil Harris has stated that his squad are excited about what is to come as the club gets ready to restart the Championship season.

The Bluebirds have been back training over the past week and are gearing up to play again on June 20th, and there’s still a lot at stake for Harris and his Cardiff team.

Cardiff are just two points off the play-off places and with just nine games left of the season, there’s a great opportunity for the club to get into the top six and challenge for a place in the Premier League.

Harris has insisted that his squad are moving in the right direction, and that they’re excited about what’s coming up over the coming months.

Speaking to the Official Cardiff City website, Harris said: “We’re still delivering the same sessions to two separate groups, but we are going to come together and play 11 vs. 11, so we are moving in the right direction with it.

“It’s been a great week in training and the players have worked really well again. Like me, they are excited about what’s coming up.”

The Verdict

Harris will be hoping that his players will have the same amount of excitement for the season as he currently does, as there is still a big opportunity for the club to reach the Premier League come the end of this campaign.

Cardiff are on the periphery of the play-off places, although there are a whole number of clubs competing for the top six meaning it will take a good run of form when the season gets back underway to finish sixth or above.

If Harris can get his Cardiff side back to full fitness and playing the way they can, then there’s no reason why the club can’t get into the play-offs.

Cardiff City boss provides star man injury update ahead of 'hard' Leeds United test

Yorkshire Evening Post

Monday 8th June 2020

CARDIFF CITY boss Neil Harris has provided an injury update ahead of his side's imminent clash against Leeds United with star man Lee Tomlin back in the group after a knee injury.

Tomlin excelled for the Bluebirds in their 3-3 Championship draw at Elland Road in the middle of December with the forward having been one of Cardiff's stand-out performers since Harris took charge in the middle of last November.

After scoring three goals in his last six games, Tomlin's season was then thought to be over after the 31-year-old injured his knee in training in February.

Yet the long extension to the Championship season due to the country's battle against coronavirus has given Tomlin prospects of featuring with Harris hoping to get the forward some game time in upcoming friendlies against local sides.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, whose season was also thought to be over because of a hamstring problem, will also feature in those friendlies while Greg Cunningham remains on the mend from an ACL injury but striker Isaac Vassell has picked up a quad problem.

The EFL season was halted shortly before United's scheduled visit to Cardiff due to the country's fight against COVID-19 but the EFL have earmarked the weekend of June 20 as a provisional date for a restart with games played behind closed doors.

NEIL HARRIS:

Asked about his squad from a football perspective in an interview on Cardiff City's website, Harris said: "From a football perspective good as in Mendy is getting more minutes into his legs and will take part in the games.

"And Lee Tomlin is back in the group now and doing the majority of it and we are hoping to get some minutes into him in the fixtures we have got coming up as well which will be a real positive.

"Greg Cunningham is stronger every day and doing more and more sessions.

"Issac has had a setback with his quad injury which is a shame and we are just waiting on details with that but that is horrendous bad luck for him."

Asked about Tomlin, Harris said: "All of the lads have got a twinkle in their eye about starting again.

"The boys who thought they might not play a lot of football, they certainly see this as a bonus.

"Tommo is infectious, a great character and a very good trainer, hence why he got injured in the first place.

"That's what we want at the football club, our senior players to show our younger ones coming through.

"Tommo has been out a long time now and he has to get over those hurdles of the mental side of things as well as the physical ones, ticking the boxes to get out onto pitch and trusting your body.

"He's doing that final stage at the moment, which is one of the hardest parts for the rehab.

"But he's also taken part in a lot of functional drills that we're doing and tactically taking part in that as well.

"We pick up all the messages and it's just making sure that we progress him at his pace.

"It's making sure we get the lads in the right place at the right time."

Harris added: "We know we are going to come back and play against Leeds and Preston in the first two games, two teams that are run extremely well and hard in games and we have to be ready.

"We are in the process of finalising friendly fixtures with a couple of local sides which will be really good for us and for them also.

"It's just building the minutes up for the boys and getting ready for the 20th of June."

Neil Harris confirms Cardiff boost ahead of opening clash v Leeds United

8th June 2020

Cardiff City boss Neil Harris has confirmed that Lee Tomlin is in the final stage of his recovery as the Bluebirds prepare for their clash with Leeds United.

The fixtures haven’t yet been confirmed by the EFL, but it is expected that the Whites will travel to the Welsh capital on the first matchday.

It has already been confirmed by the Welsh government that they are in line with England in regards to sports, meaning the game can go ahead behind-closed-doors.

Harris detailed a fitness update on Tomlin and shared that the forward is on the right track to feature in that game against Marcelo Bielsa’s men.

“Yes, he and the players have a twinkle in the eye,” he told Cardiff’s official website.

“Those who thought they might not play a lot of football certainly see this as a bonus. He has been out a while, has to get over hurdles, mental as well as physical ones, get out onto the pitch, trust your body.

“He’s doing that final stage at the moment. He’s back in the group and doing the majority of the work. We’re hoping to get him some minutes in the friendly fixtures coming up with local sides, which is a positive.”

Bielsa will be preparing his squad for a full-strength Cardiff side, knowing that it will not be easy to go and claim all three points.

That is clear, especially after what happened in the reverse fixture this season which finished 3-3 at Elland Road.

Tomlin, in particular, shined in that clash and was one of the main reasons why the Bluebirds managed to turn things around – being involved in two of the goals.

Leeds will need to stop the 31-year-old, who has both scored and assisted seven goals this season – something Bielsa will be aware of.
