More now from from the Black Lives Matter protest in Manchester - and a BBC reporter at the scene around Piccadilly Gardens estimates that the crowd has reached 15,000 and is still growing.

Rami Mwamba, a reporter for the Manchester Evening News, has been speaking to various campaigning groups who are taking part.

One person told him that he was standing far from the crowds to socially distance, but that he just "had to be there".

How have all these people been allowed to gather in one place in breach of all existing "lockdown" rules and social distancing requirements? And what about the protests in Wales? We're not meant to be outside our houses at all! Why aren't the protesters in Cardiff all being immediately arrested? I bet if they were trying to climb Pen-y-Fan they'd be in the back of a police van already.

Why don't the police use the draconian powers that have been given to them and which they have been quite happy to use earlier in the "lockdown"? They're too busy being photographed "taking a knee" I guess.

I suppose it's because they'd be accused of being racist if they tried to break up these gatherings.

This country is an absolute joke - we already have thousands more deaths than anywhere else in Europe and will be stuck in lockdown for even longer due to the absolute and utter stupidity of the huge number of absolute knobheads in the UK

I'm not knocking their purpose, as a man has died at the hands of 'professional' police officers in very 'unprofessional' circumstances; although I do have some reservations of its full relevance to the UK policing policies and those are only exacerbated by watching them (our police) being attacked in such ways

Thousands join Black Lives Matter protests across the UK

Thousands of people ignored Health Secretary Matt Hancock's plea not to gather during lockdown as they joined Black Lives Matter protests across the country.

Boxing heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua used crutches to join people on a peaceful protest in his home town of Watford.

Many people wore masks and social distancing measures were encouraged during events in London, Manchester, Cardiff, Sheffield and Newcastle, among other cities.

At Friday's coronavirus news briefing, Mr Hancock warned people against joining the demonstrations this weekend, pointing out "we're still facing a health crisis and coronavirus remains a real threat".

In a speech shared online, 30-year-old Joshua told people in Watford:

"We can no longer sit back and remain silent on this senseless, unlawful killings and sly racism on another human being - based on what? Only their skin colour.

"We need to speak out in peaceful demonstrations - just like today, so well done Watford. We must not use a demonstration for selfish motives and turn it into rioting and looting."

What's more ironic they are mostly young so in general unaffected but spreaders potentially to the most affected who we are told are the over 6Os and black and Asian people.
