Cardiff City clear another hurdle for potential June 20 clash with Leeds United

Leeds United were due to visit Cardiff City in their next fixture before the season was paused

Tuesday 2nd June 2020

EFL is expected to confirm its rearranged fixtures list for Leeds United and the rest of the Championship this week with a trip to Cardiff City a possible curtain-raiser.

Before the 2019/20 campaign was paused, the Whites were preparing for their trip to Cardiff City Stadium on March 15.

It remains to be seen whether EFL will honour the original fixture order, but, over the weekend, Cardiff boss Neil Harris hinted at his expectation it would be United first up.

The Welsh Government has been running a programme of measures separate from that of England, meaning there were some doubts about the situation across the border with professional sport.

Now, a Welsh Government spokesperson has confirmed professional sport can resume behind closed doors, as has been confirmed in England.

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: "The resumption of professional sports behind closed doors is allowed under our regulations, including horse racing, and we are working closely with governing bodies to develop an overall approach for the safe return of all sport."

This means one less obstacle between the Whites and their two trips across the border to face Cardiff and Swansea City.

On Sunday night, EFL did reiterate its return date of June 20 is subject to approval from local government on home grounds.

“The date is subject to the strict proviso all safety requirements and Government guidance is met and clubs receive clearance from their local authorities in order to stage matches at their home grounds,” they said.
