Durdle Door: Three seriously hurt 'jumping off cliff into sea'

Three people have been seriously hurt at a beach on the Jurassic coast.

Dorset Police responded to reports of concern for the safety of people who were jumping off the cliff at Durdle Door into the sea at about 15:45 BST.

Two helicopters landed on the beach and those injured were taken to hospital. The extent of their injuries is not yet known.

The beach and cliffs were evacuated. People have been advised to avoid the area.

Ch Insp Claire Phillips, of Dorset Police, said: "We have had to close the beach at Durdle Door to allow air ambulances to land.

Image caption People were asked to leave the beach so air ambulances could land

"As a result, we are evacuating the beach and the surrounding cliff area.

"I am urging people to leave the area to enable emergency services to treat the injured people."

Durdle Door is a well-known beauty spot near Lulworth and has seen large numbers of visitors during the recent hot weather as lockdown restrictions were eased.

Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove are two of the most stunning places on the South Coast and I feel blessed that they are on my door step. BUT I would never visit them on a normal sunny day, but right now I wouldn't even contemplate thinking about going there let alone going, idiots not just jumping off the cliffs but even going down to the beach, it's a bugger to get to anyway let alone marching down there with 300 other people in a line. The second wave is coming and the deaths will be in the hundreds of thousands in the UK. I hope the second curfew is 10 times harder.

I spent five sunny weeks down there at the Royal Armoured Corps school of gunnery back in the 80s at the top of the hill from the cove. There was a nice pub on that hill called Queen of Hearts that did a nice pint of cider as I remember. That said, it was a right b*stard of a walk from Wool train station if you couldn't get a taxi.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is under pressure today to reinstate lifeguards on British beaches after a number of incidents have led to fears more lives could be lost on the nation's coastline.

As temperatures soared yesterday, thousands of Britons flocked to the coast to enjoy a day of sun, sand and sea, however the RNLI only had lifeguards on 17 beaches, out of the 248 it usually covers, to protect them.

An air ambulance was called to Durdle Door in Dorset after three people injured themselves whilst jumping off the top of the beach’s ancient limestone arch, which reaches 200ft – an activity widely known as tombstoning. Last week two people died on Cornwall’s coastline and there are now calls for the emergency service to be reinstated immediately.

Volunteers within the RNLI, which operates off charitable donations and council support, have supported the public cry for help. Adam Richards is a head teacher and volunteers for a local lifesaving club – last week he rescued a nine-year-old boy from the sea. Speaking to The Times, he said the RNLI should forget “internal politics” because until lifeguard patrols restart “people are going to drown.”

The scene at Durdle Door

This image captures the air ambulance rescue operation that took place yesterday afternoon at Dorset's famed Durdle Door cove, where three beachgoers injured themselves leaping from the clifftop.

Visitors had to congregate in tight formation to enable the helicopter to land.

The above photo's of at the start of this thread are real - Also New rules come into play tomorrow not yesterday -
Or last week / month for some people !!

Both scenes terribly depressing. There'll be continuing high levels of death if we continue act so irresponsibly. We should as people be furious with the f*cking idiots who jumped off at the rock as well. They'll probably take 50 - 60 medical staff off the front line just when we need them the most.

Durdle Door busy again despite closures
Scores of visitors to Dorset's coastline today seemingly ignored warnings to stay away after yesterday's incident involving an air ambulance rescue, despite the Dorset Council closing roads to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, erecting signs and tweeting the following:

The roads to #LulworthCove and #DurdleDoor REMAIN CLOSED today (Sunday 31 May). You will not be able to visit the beaches there and will be asked to turn around if you try and access the villages. We will review tomorrow, but for now please AVOID the area.

However, many - including the council itself - reported from the early hours of today that beachgoers were 'ignoring' the signs . BBC reporter Laurence Herdman tweeted:

"It’s not even 10.15am and already thousands of cars at Durdle Door car park and people snaking down path and steps to beach - majority of visitors appear to be non-local"

He later shared the following video:

Record-breaking sunny weather lures UK crowds outside

With lockdown rules easing, people have been flocking to beaches and parks to enjoy warm weather as the UK sees its sunniest spring since records began in 1929.

Dr Mark McCarthy from the Met Office's national climate information centre said parts of England had also seen "exceptionally dry" conditions this month, with less than 10mm of rain falling on average.

Follow the weather - .

Annis I don't think anyone who has eyes and ears, can deny what is happening in england in particular, not that wales is squeaky clean, the really annoying thing is these packed scenes will bring a 2nd wave, and another lockdown, but for the whole of the uk,I find this fact galling on two fronts, one the people and two, where are the police at these places? Surely they can monitor traffic and when certain numbers are deemed to be plausible (social distancing )then close the roads leading to these beaches, surely they can manage to man it too? With the way Drakeford is going, we will be back in what could be a stricter lockdown, without getting to phase two of this one! ! I don't think my poor 80 year old mum will cope mentally,if she has to endure another 12/14 weeks at home, alone!! I know this has made me come to the point of,from today,I'm making every day count of this new relaxed lockdown! Will be seeing nearly all of my family in this period (and yes one lives 10 miles away, but we have agreed to travel 5 miles in each direction to meet up,and stay within the boundaries set out  :old: :bluebird:

Durdle Door owner questions unlimited travel after weekend chaos

The owner of Durdle Door has said the easing of lockdown restrictions in England to allow for unlimited travel resulted in an "unacceptable influx of visitors" on beaches and beauty spots.

James Weld issued the statement following chaotic beach scenes at the Dorset site over the weekend, including three people suffering serious injuries after jumping off cliffs into the sea.

The three men were taken to hospital after leaping from the top of Durdle Door's limestone arch, which is 200ft high.
Thousands of people were evacuated from the beach and surrounding cliff area to allow air ambulances to land.

Mr Weld, who owns the Lulworth Estate on which Durdle Door is situated, said: "It is clear that the restriction on travelling should have been limited to local journeys only, which would not have resulted in the huge pressures being suddenly foisted on local road networks and on sites such as Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door.

"Unrestricted travel has undoubtedly led to the unacceptable influx of visitors, despite the enormously damaging effects of restrictions on the economy and on jobs."

Words failed me this weekend seeing how busy it has become down here, people camped on beaches in droves, camper vans parked up anywhere remotely scenic and yet people still stick up for people on FB saying not everyone has a garden. People were even wishing the jumpers at Durdle Door a speedy recovery, bring on the rain so it can stop people mass gathering.

Two-metre social distancing rule based on outdated science

The two-metre rule on social distancing is based on outdated science that may have overestimated the risk by up to fifteen times, senior MPs and scientists have warned.

The Government on Tuesday said the controversial rule would stay in place despite a major study showing the comparative risk of halving the distance to one metre was far less than previously thought.

Business leaders and MPs have called for the guidance to be altered in line with WHO guidance and rules followed by some other countries in order to avoid mass redundancies and help the hospitality sector reopen.

However, last week, Sir Patrick Vallance, the chief scientific adviser, suggested two metres was still necessary as the risk of spreading the virus remained too great.
