Cardiff City, Stoke City and Preston keen on signing Celtic winger Jonny Hayes for free -

The Bluebirds are one of a number of clubs said to have registered an interest in the 32-year-old after Celtic failed to offer him a new deal

Celtic's Jonny Hayes is a target for Cardiff City, according to reports

Cardiff City have reportedly registered an interest in signing Celtic winger Jonny Hayes on a free transfer this summer.

The winger, 32, has been central to Celtic's efforts over the last few seasons, having won the Scottish title in each of the three years he has been there since moving from Aberdeen.

However, the Scottish champions have not offered him a new deal and the player, who can play on both flanks, confirmed on social media on Friday night that he will leave Parkhead.

And, according to the Daily Mail, the Bluebirds are one of a number of clubs who have been closely monitoring the situation.

Championship rivals Stoke City and Preston North End are other clubs who are said to be keen on signing him for free this summer, as well as Hayes' former club Aberdeen.

"Football at times brings tough decisions," Hayes wrote on Instagram to confirm his departure.

"[From] breaking a leg to the highs of winning a treble, the last three years have been an enjoyable journey, in which I've worked under some terrific staff and shared a dressing room with some unbelievable guys.

"I'd like to thank you for all the support received along the way."

It appears Hayes will therefore be seeking pastures new but, unless there is a huge clear-out at Cardiff City, it seems unlikely he will head to the Welsh capital.

Neil Harris has Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Junior Hoilett, Gavin Whyte and Josh Murphy, who was linked with a move to the Glasgow club back in January, currently at his disposal, while it is as yet unknown whether loanee Albert Adomah will return next season.

City are unlikely to have great funds available to them this summer, however, so a free transfer might well be appealing in the event that there is a winger exodus at Cardiff City Stadium in the summer transfer window.

The Bluebirds were said to be competing with Celtic for his signature back in 2017 before he made the move to Parkhead.

Hayes has scored two goals in 68 appearances for the Scottish club.

Didn’t play a lot at Celtic but very pacy and direct, think he'd be a bench warmer and at 32 not convinced he’d be an improvement.

Didn't we try to sign him a few years back and he played us along before signing for Celtic?

32 years old and 2 goals in 68 games in a pub league.

Not exactly one for the future is he?

Would have thought the very last position we need someone in is on the wing. Isn't our most talented youth team prospect Mayembe a winger. Would rather give someone like that a go rather than a 32 year old from Celtic.

Hopefully Stoke or Preston will beat us to this signing. 8-)

Reply Fb Celtic fan:

Andy Nelson: Annis total 100% committed player everytime he pulled a shirt on . Was a winger but was often played as a fullback . Surprised he wasn’t offered another year at Celtic as a squad player .

Cardiff City interested in move for Republic of Ireland international

Cardiff City are interested in Celtic winger Johnny Hayes, as per a report by the daily mail.

The Republic of Ireland international is leaving the Glasgow giants at the end of next month when his contract expires.

This has alerted the likes of Preston North End, Stoke City and his former club Aberdeen, as well as Neil Harris’ Cardiff.

The Bluebirds boss will be in the hunt for some reinforcements to his squad over the coming months as he looks to put his own stamp on his newly inherited side.

Hayes, who is 32 years old, would be a shrewd free agent signing for the Welsh outfit as he would add more options and depth out wide for next season.

Celtic signed him in June 2017 for a fee of around £1 million and he has since helped them win the Scottish Premiership title in all three of his campaigns at the club.

Hayes started his career in England with spells at Reading and Leicester City before moving up to Scotland to join Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2009. He went onto make 100 appearances for the Highlands side and chipped in with 25 goals.

Aberdeen swooped to sign him 2012 and he spent five years with the Dons before Celtic lured him to Glasgow. Hayes will now have to weigh up his options this summer as a free agent this summer.

The winger will not be short of options, with Cardiff now believed to be in the queue of clubs interested in his services.

Cardiff City join race to sign midfielder wanted by two Championship clubs

By Luke Phelps

01/06/20

Cardiff City are interested in signing Celtic’s Jonny Hayes this summer, reports The Daily Mail.

The 32-year-old is set to leave Celtic Park this summer, after the club declined to offer him a new contract. Hayes who can play throughout the midfield and upfront, began his career with Reading.

He spent the bulk of his Reading stay out on-loan within the Football League – he spent time at both Forest Green and MK Dons – before joining Leicester City in 2007, and again finding himself the subject of continuous loan-deals.

With his career not quite panning out in England, the Irishman headed up to Scotland, joining Inverness CT in 2009.

He spent a couple of seasons there before landing at Aberdeen where he spent a further five seasons, making a name for himself and earning a move to the Scottish giants back in 2017.

The Irish international though has only scored two SPL goals in his three seasons at Celtic, and has steadily fallen out of contention towards the end of his three year contract at the club.

Both Preston and Stoke City have put their names in the hat to sign Hayes this summer, and Aberdeen are also said to be interested in bringing him back to the club as per The Daily Mail report.

The verdict

Hayes has some good experience behind him, but some not so good experiences playing in England.

He’s a much more mature and developed player now and perhaps he could still offer something in the Championship, but he’ll likely be a high-earner coming from Celtic, and it’d make him a bit of a risky signing for Cardiff.

Decent player on his day though I think he played his best stuff at Aberdeen where he was a first choice.

Has suffered a few injuries since his move, not sure if he's what is required to push on but he always gives 100% and may have another decent season left in the tank.

HAYES HOPING FOR REGULAR MATCH TIME

01/06/20

Jonny Hayes admits leaving Celtic will be difficult after being "heavily involved" in the team and having encouraging discussions about a new contract before the pandemic struck.

Celtic announced on Saturday that both Hayes and defender Jozo Simunovic would be leaving the club, who did not take up a one-year option on the Croatian defender's contract.

Hayes' three-year deal is coming to an end and he revealed a decision was taken on his future in the past week.

The 32-year-old told talkSPORT: "I spoke to (manager) Neil Lennon a couple of days before the Rangers game back in December. He was aware I was out of contract in six months and(said) he'd like me to stay.

"As the season went on we had similar conversations. He was quite keen for me to stay and saw me as part of his plans. I had the same conversations with (assistant manager) John Kennedy.

"When it comes down to the decision being made this week, I don't know if the financial impact the virus has had on Scottish football has contributed to it or not.

"But I wasn't being phased out, I was still playing regularly, in the team or off the bench, up until this virus struck.

"It's always hard to think about leaving a club when you're heavily involved in the team."

However, the Irishman did reflect that he might be better moving on. The versatile left sided player made 68 Celtic appearances, a total which would have been higher had he not broken his leg during his first season.

"Maybe if I stayed, I might not have got as much game time," he said. "I'm a little bit older now, it's probably better for me to go out and play a bit more regularly."

Strange this, still playing yet the rumor mill looks in full swing. Can't see this going anywhere although the Irish ferries are closer. Might be a chance if we don't make the playoffs and can't secure Albert's services for another year.
