Didn't remember the kit but can hear singing in the rain in my ears. Mad but great day that. Even the tiny village I was from Coychurch ran a coach. I still went on the supporters coach though, they were way to crazy for me.

yep...was early in the season following promotion and everyone was right up for it..
mad times indeed.. Charlton was the 1st away that season followed by the Oldham game there was a thread about a few weeks back.. then orient followed by this Chelsea game....all very eventful

Was that the year that Cardiff fans went on the rampage up there and Chelsea did the same at our place later in the year?
Think a Cardiff fan was stabbed outside ground and if my mind serves me correctly when the guy was interviewed on bbc Wales he said the guy who did it said “That’s for what you did up at Chelsea”.
Weird how certain things stick in your mind from yesteryear but I can’t remember what I had for lunch yesterday.

I was on the Coychurch bus, Rob Morris (rip) organised it, they picked us up in Cardiff on the way, good bloke was Rob.

I was there,was there 6000 City fans there?

What a mad day out that was, the fun started as soon as we got there, a coach load of us with a good mix of lads from llanrumney, valleys, all parts of cardiff 50 plus on this bus, found a pub in the back streets of chelsea where we were soon sussed out by the wanting to kill us chelsea fans which we did very well against, the police were called and that was that,
but things got worse as it was time to leave the pub to go to the game i noticed the old bill had gone and so had half of our mob, as the 20-30 walked down this street all we could see was lots & lots & lots of chelsea outside this pub with loads making their way towards us, i was only 17 at this time and i said to the lads most of them a lot older than me to spread out across the road as there is only one way we are going and thats through them and everyone agreed that if anybody shits out they will get it at the next home game, just as we were inches from each other a few old bill turned up from nowhere and pushed the chelsea back leaving just a narrow cap for us to pass through i can still see the evil on there faces as they pushed hard to get at us hell knows what would have happend if the police had not turned up (yeah i think i do ) then on to the ground which in its self was another mad story,i could wright a book on just this one day alone.

He was a good bloke, a completely different character away from the football. Never the same after the night down the Piper when 3 Jack coaches called in after the Palace Swansea match at Ninian. A dozen or so Jacks ( it should of been 50 ) and Rob were sent down. We'd get the odd coach and a bit of uncomfortable banter from time to time but they came fully intent on wiping the building and 10 or so Cardiff fans in it out that night. Fortunately for me I stayed home doing some homework. I don't think he ever went to City match again.

Yes he didn't bother going after coming out of prison, had some good times going to away games with Rob in the 70's, always great company and a good laugh, gutted to hear he passed away a couple of years ago.

indeed.. you could talk to 30 blokes off 30 different coaches all with equally mad but totally unique tales depending on where they stopped on way up and back ,who they bumped into and where they parked... bonkers..

Yes what a day remember being in 5he ground on the north stand I think and about 100 choice Chelsea charged at us nobody budged an inch ,copper told us that they had charged wolves and cleared them scrambling on to the pitch .

Top day everyone had been looking forward to it for ages. I remember them bursting in our end to be quickly repelled and something to do with a scoreboard (no not pompey) when charlsey scored. Then I remember some old slag shouting you Welsh bastards before someone put her front window in just in time for Frank bough

well certain clubs were up for it.. many brought none at all...
it was a case of if your going away you have to accept there being a chance of being caught up in it and not just in or around the ground. it could kick off anywhere ,trains, train stations , service stations and pretty much anywhere you stopped . Birmingham new street in particular was often a lively experience

Chelsea fans caused a lot of trouble at away games that season (76/77), but it was the Chelsea - Millwall game at Stamford Bridge that was the worst I think. Remember watching it on the News, I think either a wall or segregation fence collapsed under the weight of fans. Looked pretty bad at the time, if I remember correctly.
