A former Premier League player has branded Ryan Giggs 'unbelievably overrated'

Manchester United great Ryan Giggs has been branded 'unbelievably overrated' by a former Premier League player in an astonishing Twitter rant.

The Welshman is one of the most decorated players in English football history, having won an incredible 34 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two Champions Leagues, during his 24-year playing career at Old Trafford.

He is widely regarded as one of the best wingers ever to have graced the English top flight, often acknowledged to be the best league in the world, and was lauded for his speed, dribbling and cultured left foot.

However, it appears not everyone subscribes to that view.

Former Sheffield United and Birmingham City player Curtis Woodhouse, who later turned to professional boxing after hanging up his football boots, has offered his scathing assessment of the 64-cap former Wales international.

"Ryan Giggs, another unbelievably overrated Manchester United player," Woodhouse wrote on Twitter. "Outstanding longevity but in a team that dominated for years and were a free-scoring machine his statistics for goals and assists is awful. Another Manchester United myth, good player, never anything more.

"Giggs has 162 assists in the PL over 22 years to go with his 109 goals, again over 22 years. His team dominated them 22 years of football breaking scoring records as they went. Ryan Giggs was a left winger, looking at his stats you may confuse him with a left back.

"Giggs didn’t even have a good left foot!! He was an outstanding athlete but his left foot wasn’t that good. His delivery was OK, not great, he couldn’t spray it about, he was a great athlete. Let’s keep it real."

It would seem, however, that Woodhouse is certainly in the minority, given the volume of top football stars who have lavished Giggs, now Wales manager, with praise over the years.

So, we thought we would pick out some of the other stars who had a slightly different view to Woodhouse over the years...

Johan Cruyff: “Eric Cantona is a great player, but he’s not as good as Ryan Giggs.”

Sir Alex Ferguson: “It’s almost impossible to replace a player like Ryan Giggs – you do not find many players like him. He is a rarity. He has world-class attributes and has achieved so much at one club. You can only look up to him.”

George Best: “Maybe one day people will say I was another Ryan Giggs.”

Fabio Capello: “Like George Best, there is a special fantasia about him”

Zinedine Zidane: “If he was French, Pires or myself would have been on the bench.”

Alessandro Del Piero: “Only two players made me cry when watching football, one was Diego Maradona and the other Ryan Giggs.”

Ron Atkinson: “Ryan makes you believe there is a football God.”

Sir Alex Ferguson (again): “When Ryan runs at players he gives them twisted blood. They don’t want to be a defender any more.”

Jean Tigana: “Giggs is the detonator, the man who can make Manchester United explode”

Eric Harrison: “A young Giggsy was like a Ballet Dancer. I had never seen a young player like that and I had seen the Busby Babes.”

Luis Figo: “He has the most talent than any other football player. He is delicate and dynamic. He is the player chosen by God.”

Carlos Queiroz: “Giggs is football itself.”

My first reaction was "who the hell is Curtis Woodhouse" but then looked him up. Think he played 3 times for Birmingham City in the Premier League- a side that went down- being loaned to Rotherham. That hardly qualifies as being described as a former Premier League player.

Had a respectable career in the Championship and below but hardly a Premier League player.
