On This Day | 2008 FA Cup Final

On 17th May 2008, Cardiff City competed in the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.

The Bluebirds had reached their third Final in the competition, taking on Portsmouth in front of 89,874 supporters – still the largest crowd for any football match at the new Wembley Stadium.

The famous Cup run had seen City advance past Chasetown, Hereford, Wolves and Middlesbrough, before Joe Ledley scored the winning goal in the Semi-Final against Barnsley.

Another win at Wembley would have seen City become the first side from outside the top flight to lift the FA Cup since 1980.

However, the Bluebirds couldn't quite repeat the feat of '27, as Nwankwo Kanu scored the game's only goal in an agonisingly narrow defeat.
