Can anyone explain?

Sun May 17, 2020 5:44 pm

Can anyone explain the rational why the council have decided to widen the pathway on castle side of castle street starting at cathedral rd to boulevard de nante? That side of rd as designated bus stops outside castle entrance and around corner towards boulevard de nante! Do busses stop in middle of rd as only be 2 lanes one each way apparently...... Surely otherside of rd is better as that's where shops are? Social distancing is all well and good but !!

When I posted the other day, stating they were doing this, someone reckoned they were doing it anyway,to reduce traffic in the centre of the city? They are doing it on well field road in Roath, removing cars from both sides of the street apparently, the poster said they are just bringing it forward, under the guise of social distancing? ? How is that going to reduce traffic? Cars will be standing in queues for longer! :old: :bluebird:

Coronavirus: Cardiff path widened for social distancing

Work is under way to remove a traffic lane next to Cardiff Castle to help pedestrians and cyclists with social distancing.

The Castle Street path is being widened, initially with temporary barriers.

Extending pavements into the road is also taking place in other areas.

Councillor Caro Wild said safety was a "priority" as some people were stepping into the road on narrow paths to try to maintain social distancing rules.

UK governments are advising people to stay two metres apart to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

"The real priority for us has been around safety and that's in terms of people being able to socially distance but our roads also need to be a lot safer," said Mr Wild.

The new shared space will run from the Cathedral Road/Cowbridge Road junction, over Canton Bridge, along Castle Street, Duke Street and up to the North Road-Boulevard De Nantes junction.

Earlier works were introduced around Roath Park Lake to create a one-way footpath to aid social distancing, as well as the removal of visitor parking bays nearest to the lake to provide additional space for cyclists and joggers.

I said before this as been in pipeline but why opposite side of rd to shops And where do the busses stop as I said that side rd as designated stops outside castle and around corner? How do emergency vehicles pass when there is only two lanes full of vehicles who cannot simply move over as no room! not forgetting it is only direct route through centre, as for welfield rd thats even worse scenario plus due to nature of shops only couple of people can access them at time what happens to distancing with shops every couple of yards having same problems ? These ideas are totally illogical and no thought to there practicality...

I think its just another step in the eventual, and total, pedestrianisation of the whole of Cardiff City centre (except for buses and bicycle's). An eventual Total ban on All cars into the City Centre.

All part of the Welsh assembly governments overall Metro plans, in conjunction with Transport for Wales (TFW) objectives.

The Metro plans dont say anything about cars, other than encouraging reduced use of them. Get ready for more gridlock.
Saying that, its a better place without cars...one benefit of this lockdown. It wont be long before its road chaos and pollution again..

The Metro basically is about upgrading, renewing, and improving rail, tram, and bus links and services throughout Wales,,, and in particular the City centres. This in turn, is to encourage less motor car usage, & more reliance on the use of public transport and bicycles.

Its a long term plan, but it is happening, slowly but surely. There has already been talk of a congestion charge being planned for Cardiff City centre roads, not so long ago.... It can only be short a matter of time, Imho.

Pedestrianised city centre as always been labour's goal but it's a shame that they have totally destroyed the best public
transit service in uk by closing bus station and moving bus stops miles apart and away from trains.... now we are not encourage to use public transport use bikes and walk the many miles to centre ! Otherwise we use our cars so great idea to close roads so that cars have nowhere to go..... still like to know how can widening rd outside castle be logical when shops are other side rd? :o

That’s fine to reduce the amount travelling in to work.. but if you live locally and need to traverse the town centre regularly it’s a nightmare..

Dont think people or council appreciate the length of diversion if castle st is closed and the extra traffic jams it will produce on alternative routes? As a side note one way roath park!! Its approx 1mile around the lake another bright idea from council :o

All about the infrastructure again al.. they keep building more houses, and expect everyone to get on a bus.
They will have to build an underground one day if they want transport above to function. Fat chance tho, it takes 5 years to build a bus station here..

A bus station where you can get off bus but cannot get on one! The plan is to have stops elsewhere bit like now, councils will waste millions on doing these pathways and give it 6months or less and be redundant except for bikers going 30mph along them making it unsafe for pedestrians... social distancing is a great idea in theory but in reality it will be impossible in couple of months when more people are about like tenby on bank holiday?

They'll need to put anti-terrorist bollards wherever they do it, as otherwise, it is a target for a London Bridge style attack.

Isn't the new bus station going in between the BBC building ( why put the beeb there I don't know) and the Great Western?
I wouldn't have described the old Bus station as the best public transit service in the UK, unless it's based on the number of winos, junkies and beggars per square foot and the unmistakable odour of stale piss.

agree with the winos, junkies and stale piss bit.. but those were easily solvable problems.
but I agree with Allen regarding its positioning being a big plus point . its something most cities would love to have.

The new Interchange plans can be found on an interactive site.. ‘Cardiff Developments’; also shows all town centre builds.

Think there is only two places in uk that have national rail terminus and central bus station next to each other! You can travel anywhere
in uk and wales by train or bus from same spot that's what made it one of best transport hubs in country? It as been destroyed by council with ludicrous situation of now putting bus stops upto half mile apart !! And plans for new station is drop off only and people having to walk to god knows where to catch connection.... ffs why not put the two new buildings in callaghan square behind train station? And new tram terminus (IF GETS BUILT) is marked for old brains brewery
