‘ Worst mass fight outside football ‘

Fri May 15, 2020 2:29 pm

Right, we're all fed up. Just got a message from from an old mate with memories of mid 70s teen years and nights out in places like like Tito's, Top Rank, Caroline St, pre-done up Bute St and the various old pubs and clubs of Cardiff estates, Barry and the Valleys.

We've sparked each others memories and all kinds of stuff came flooding back. So what's the most spectacular scrap you've seen outside football?

For a starter some examples are............I once saw a night of a whole series of crazy fights across the city centre between soldiers and locals. It must have been when something like the tattoo was on at the castle. I won't be the only person here who has seen everyone in sight fighting in Caroline Street. On a first date with a girl from Merthyr, she took me to her local and when I came out of the toilet there must have been 50 people of both sexes and all ages fighting like mad in the pub. She just said "a man got angry"

Biggest fight I've seen is in a wedding night party at Tonyrefail Workingman's Club. All in - Including the bride in her dress :o

oooh weddings and funerals

My mate did say he saw so many people arrested at a wedding in Barry that the police had to ask people to queue as they waited for the vans to take away the arrested. Maybe some truth in that.

Hey....if there had been cctv or mobiles in the 70s or 80s then there would be some sights. I went to Weston super Mare on a bank holiday around 1970 or 71 and saw at least 200 of the original skins scrapping. Would have been Brizzel and perhaps city vs rovers

I remember as a 10 year old being with my mum and dad in Aberdare park around 1972 and seeing around 200 - 300 original skins, white trousers, crombies , harrington jackets etc. That was a sight I remember to this day.

Outside the Dog and Duck in Womanby St, one hot summer night, early 90s..remember looking out of the window to the street below, and it was alive with bodies. One of those nights..

Late 80’s in Charles street, about 150 Docks v Ely going for it, no one backing off for ages. Some weird clubs on that street back then. One of my first nights out in town as a youngster, a right eye opener...... :o

Definitely at Rugby for me, seen and been involved in some brutal ones.

Might have been diferent back in the 70s and 80s but I wouldn't realy call the stuff that happens at Football as 'fights'. Sometimes there might be lots of people at the scene but seldom are they all 'at it'.

Worst iv seen at a Valleys Rugby Club, easily 60/70 people proper going for it, people sparked out all over the shop

I never seen it but a plasterer from Tonypandy told me about a mass brawl in a boozer after a dog show, said when brawl kicked off the dogs also got involved fighting each other and biting people.

The worst I've seen was about 100 yards up the road from Tonyrefail workmans in the Boars Head new years eve 1999.
It was a moody atmosphere all night and then kicked off about 12.30am involving multiple people.
A few of the windows got put through with 1 brick hitting someone on the back of the head.
Stupidly there was only 1 bouncer there, he got filled and had his car smashed up.
Crazy night.

Yes, a rugby match for me, too. About the same number going full pelt because the away team had pinched a tight game with a late penalty but instigated (as ever) by one drunken idiot who somehow managed to escape the ending melee

Press were there but not a Richard Bird in the local paper when the game was reported

A nightclub in Germany. Two contingents of squaddies from different regiments numbering around a hundred and fifty blokes, all in with no bystanders other than some German girls.Glasses, ashtrays, tables and chairs. Anything that could be used as a weapon was used including the DJ's metal mic that a pal of mine was smashing into his opponents face. MP's or the German cops wouldn't enter until it died down. The place was wrecked.

Worst and most shocking was 20 or so full at it at a wedding at that park hotel in ebbw vale that became an Indian. The shocking bit is I saw them at around midday all going at it outside. But the funniest one was when a loud of people from the west Midlands attacked each other plus the judges at a caravan park near Aberystwyth because their hideous wife / girlfriend /daughter didn't win the beauty contest

Re: Worst mass fight outside football

Funniest one I can remember is prompted by the dog show and beauty contest ones above

Butlins Minehead. Must have been about 1968. Some kids got in a typical childhood wrestling fight in the playground. Escalated to mass fight of the parents who came out of the Hawaii style bar there. Every time I see Hi Di Hi I think of it. Fortunately no damage done but like something from a Charlie Chaplin film. Every time it calmed down someone kicked it off again - usually one of the Mams

Welsh brewers cup final, years ago think it was Hartridge from Newport and Wattstown from up the Rhondda, at the old national stadium. People going arse over tit down the seats even the women from Wattstown were getting involved. The mob from Newport were a bit better organised. I was there as a guest of Welsh Brewers much more entertainment off the field than on it.

Quite amazingly, the biggest fight that I've witnessed was also a wedding in Tonyrefail!! Pretty sure it was the Rugby Club there though. I was a paltry 15 years old or so and was playing in a band with my Dad and one of his mates. We'd been paid extra to do more after our encore and inside 30 seconds of our first song a mass brawl broke out! We packed up our gear prompto and left! Easiest £60 we ever made!

Maybe there is some absolute head case vicar doing weddings in Tonyrefail. I wonder what song you played? I used to go to a youth club where a certain Slade song seemed to get it all kicking off, so it was banned. Eventually a new DJ came along months later, someone sent a request in and off it went again. I can't remember the song but it wasn't Merry Christmas!

The local paper [ Rhondda Leader] blamed City fans who were among the Wattstown support.

People from the Baglan Pub mostly, also some of the Treherbert Rugby lot. Jocky Wilson said to his minder, 'Get me the hell out of here'. A well known City hooligan was in several of the photos of the fighting in the local paper the next week!

The kick off cue song was Get Down and Get With it - massive skin song in its day

This is making my memory come back. I have lived in England for years where people think rugby clubs are posh and the shout of "all in" doesn't translate. How many times have I heard that called across some rec with the resulting mayhem. Or, across a disco dance floor.

First time I saw a mass fight taught me a big lesson. I went to the Top Rank in Queens St at 15 or 16 and thought I was a right little player, especially as I got in somehow and got served. Then two groups of guys in mid twenties to thirties went at it. Llanrumney vs the docks. A different level of madness completely.

Glad I have never been to Tonyrefail mind! The thing that makes South Wales special and which terrifies people elsewhere is that there are 200 Tonyrefails out there

You know, I honestly can't remember what the song was!! I'm about 75% that it was out Status Quo Medley. I'm pretty sure that we kicked off (puns intended) with Caroline.
