Cardiff City demand apology from Reading after fans' arrests - BBC Sport

BBC

Cardiff City want an apology from Reading after events that led to four Bluebirds fans being arrested by Thames Valley Police during their 1-1 FA Cup draw at Madejski Stadium on Saturday.

The force said the four were arrested for "alleged racially aggravated abuse" and later released under investigation.

Cardiff dispute those allegations.

They said: "Language could be heard taking place between fans of both clubs and was of an anti-Welsh/anti-English nature".

The statement added: "We are extremely disappointed that Reading Football Club chose to label the behaviour as racist and homophobic.

"We also question their protocol and procedure on the day and welcome a full investigation into its use for the benefit of both our clubs and indeed British football."

Fans' chants led to a public address warning to Cardiff fans during the match.

Cardiff chief executive Ken Choo said in the statement on Monday: "The announcement made at Reading this weekend was both damaging and hurtful and we would welcome a public apology from them to our supporters."

He added: "Our football club prides itself on its respect of all people, irrespective of their background, beliefs or orientation.

"Cardiff is a diverse and welcoming, modern multicultural city and our supporters' actions reflect that at our games.

"We have a zero tolerance approach towards racist or homophobic behaviour and our supporters' conduct consistently reflects that."

Choo is confident that after police conclude their investigation, "the reputation of our club and fans will be fully and unequivocally restored".

In their statement, Cardiff said: "It is understood that the four Cardiff City supporters arrested and subsequently released prior to investigation were cited during the fixture for using what could be considered as unwarranted language.

"This language could be heard taking place between fans of both clubs and was of an anti-Welsh/anti-English nature."

Reading have been asked to comment.

The Football Association is investigating and has asked both clubs for their observations.

The two clubs meet again on Friday night in the Championship at Cardiff City Stadium, with the Royals returning to the Welsh capital for the FA Cup fourth-round replay on Tuesday, 4 February.

Authorities only doing their job and the result was justice!

Reading FC should give these guys an unreserved apology and Sky Sports News should retract their 'story' in a similar manner in which they put it out!

A few on here had them 'bang to rights' on the day and should also apologise accordingly ;)

This is a classic example of how society has lost the plot with regard to racism. Like nearly everyone else I don't like the thought of a person being singled out for abuse, loss of opportunity or other detriments simply due to the colour of their skin.

However, I honestly believe that these incidents are very much less prevalent than they were due to strict laws and the greater amount of BAME people in the UK which means it is harder to single out.

This is why we see so many fabricated stories like the one about Cardiff City fans at Reading or false accusations like the one this week where someone tried to claim racist abuse because their boss used the term "crack the whip" which was interpreted as a reference to the slave trade

The UK is a very tolerant place to live and if it really is a far right racist society as some would have us believe then why are there thousands of BAME people trying to illegally get here every day in the back of lorries or by small boats crossing the English Channel?

It is time to stop this nonsense and that should start with a full apology to those City fans falsely accused of this heinous behaviour.

Big boys pushing their weight and making a mess of it.

I recall the medias apologising to their targets when they got it wrong. Ok it was in small print most likely found on the middle page in the bottom right corner. They used minimum words to cover the apology but at least it was something. Now they don't bother with that. Too big for their boots come to mind.

I wonder if the Wales on Sunday will give this exactly the same front page headlines they gave the original pile of bullshit when it happened?

I bet we won't see this on Sky Sports News either.

Never mind - it's only Cardiff City after all.

I also await a comment from Jacqui Oatley who couldn't wait to jump on the load of bollocks bandwagon.

Four Cardiff City fans arrested at Reading game released with no further action

The Bluebirds supporters were arrested for alleged racially aggravated abuse, but Thames Valley Police will now take no action

By Glen Williams

Sunday 17th May 2020

Four Cardiff City fans who were arrested at Reading in January have been released with no further action, Thames Valley Police have confirmed.

There was an announcement made over the speaker system during the FA Cup clash at the Madejski Stadium, which warned travelling fans allegedly making racist and homophobic chants to desist.

Four people were subsequently arrested, but were released under further investigation.

Thames Valley Police, however, have today said no further action will be taken.

"All four people who were arrested in connection with this incident have been released with no further action," the said.

"The investigation has been filed."

Cardiff City, who vehemently disputed the allegations, hit out at Reading Football Club for accusing Bluebirds supporters of alleged racist and homophobic chanting and also demanded an apology.

The Royals subsequently said they would conduct a review into their match-day protocols and issued an apology to the majority of Cardiff fans who attended the match.

The bad blood continued between the two sides, who played against one another three times in 11 days back in January and February, at Cardiff City Stadium in a Championship match, during which a supporter in the away end was ejected after complaints that the death of Emiliano Sala had been mocked.
