Manchester United are lining up a move for Wales starlet Rabbi Matondo in the event that a deal for Jadon Sancho falls through, WalesOnline has learned.
United have held a protracted interest in signing Borussia Dortmund star Sancho, once Matondo's contemporary in the youth ranks at Manchester City, but a move for the England youngster is thought to cost more than £100million.
Matondo would represent a cut-price option for Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's side this summer and sources close to the player have told WalesOnline that United are monitoring the player's situation closely.
The Old Trafford club turned to Wales last year when a move for Sancho failed to come to fruition, signing Welsh flyer Daniel James for £15m from Swansea City.
It is understood that Solskjaer sought counsel from Wales boss Ryan Giggs over the signing of James and that could well be the case with Matondo this time round.
The winger, 19, cut his teeth in the game at Cardiff City before moving to United's bitter rivals City in 2016, where he caught the eye of Bundesliga outfit Schalke.
He has enjoyed life in Germany this term and has become a crucial part of the first-team squad at Schalke, having scored once in 19 league appearances for the club to date.
Matondo, who has four Wales caps to his name, could well come up against Sancho this weekend, with Schalke set to face Dortmund in a huge clash in the first weekend of the Bundesliga's return.
And the planned Welsh raid might not stop there, either, with United also thought to be keen on Swans centre back Joe Rodon.
It is all seemingly in-keeping with United's transfer stance of signing promising, British talent in recent seasons, with the likes of James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire all having signed for the Old Trafford club within the last year.
United are also said to be interested in English stars Jack Grealish and 16-year-old Birmingham City sensation Jude Bellingham.
