Second virus wave may be more severe than first, England’s chief medical officer warns
Professor Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer for England.

A second wave of coronavirus could be “more severe” than the first and may spread more rapidly if it arrives in winter, England’s chief medical officer has warned.

Every country seeking to ease lockdown measures now must negotiate an “extremely difficult balancing act” to keep the pandemic under control, Professor Chris Whitty said in an online Gresham College lecture.

In particular, the virus reproduction “R” number must be kept below one – meaning each infected person could expect to pass it to fewer than one other person on average.

Mr Whitty comes across as a very honest guy. His delivery is measured and calm. Let's hope a second wave never arrives.

Exactly.

An asteroid "could" hit the Earth tomorrow and kill everyone.

This, however, we are in control of! Don't be dicks.

I don’t have a jar of glue how this R number is determined. I also don’t see why 1 is the big problem they say it is.

Shouldn’t there be a bit more transparency.

I think I’ve worked it out...

* 4 year olds can go to school but university students who have paid for the tuition they haven’t had and the accommodation they aren’t living in, can’t go to university.

* A teacher can go to school with many 4 year olds that they are not related to but can’t see one 4 year old that they are related to.

* You can sit in a park, but not tomorrow or Tuesday but by Wednesday that’ll be fine.

* You can meet one person from another household for a chat or to sunbathe but not two people so if you know two people from another household you have to pick your favourite. Hopefully, you’re also their favourite person from your household or this could be awkward. But possibly you’re not. But as I can’t go closer than 2m to the one you choose anyway you wouldn’t think having the other one sat next to them would matter - unless two people would restrict your eyeline too much and prevent you from being alert.

* You can work all day with your colleagues but you can’t sit in their garden for a chat after work.

* You can now do unlimited exercise when quite frankly just doing an hour a day feels like you are some kind of fitness guru. I can think of lots of things that I would like to be unlimited but exercise definitely isn’t one of them.

* You can drive to other destinations although which destinations is unclear.

* The buses are still running past your house but you shouldn’t get on one. We should just let empty buses drive around so bus drivers aren’t doing nothing.

* It will soon be time to quarantine people coming into the country by air... but not yet. It’s too soon. And not ever if you’re coming from France because... well, I don’t know why, actually. Because the French version of coronavirus wouldn’t come to the UK maybe.

* Our youngest children go back to school first because... they are notoriously good at not touching things they shouldn’t, maintain personal space at all times and never randomly lick you.

* We are somewhere in between 3.5 and 4.5 on a five point scale where 5 is all of the virus and 1 is none of the virus but 2,3 and 4 can be anything you’d like it to be really. Some of the virus? A bit of the virus? Just enough virus to see off those over 70s who were told to self isolate but now we’ve realised that they’ve done that a bit too well despite us offloading coronavirus patients into care homes and now we are claiming that was never said in the first place, even though it’s in writing in the stay at home guidance.

* The slogan isn’t stay at home any more. So we don’t have to say at home. Except we do. Unless we can’t. In which case we should go out. But there will be fines if we break the rules. So don’t do that.

Don’t forget...

Stay alert... which Robert Jenrick has explained actually means Stay home as much as possible. Obviously.

Control the virus. Well, I can’t even control my dogs and I can actually see them. Plus I know a bit about dogs and very little about controlling viruses.

Save lives. Always preferable to not saving lives, I’d say, so I’ll try my best with that one, although hopefully I don’t need telling to do that. I know I’m bragging now but not NOT saving lives is something I do every day.

So there you are. If you’re the weirdo wanting unlimited exercise then enjoy. But not until Wednesday. Obviously.

My understanding is R (which stands for reproduction) must be under 1 for the rate of infection to fall. If R=1 then the infection rate stays the same and there will be no fall in infections or deaths or current restrictions.

If R is above 1 then infection (& therefore death) increases and if it reaches 3 (which is where it was just prior to lock down) then infection and death go off the scale as every person who has COVID-19 will on average infect 3 other people which will lead to hospitals being overwhelmed and hundred of thousands of deaths in the UK, unless there is another strict lock down.

The slogan isn’t stay at home any more.??? So we don’t have to stay at home

1 England "Stay alert"
2 Wales stay at home
It obvious what does and does not apply to us. I am not any more intelligent than the next man, but I know that the English rules at the moment do NOT apply to Wales

4 year old's have parents who often or not have jobs which they would have difficult in doing if their children are not in school.

* A teacher can go to school with many 4 year olds that they are not related to but can’t see one 4 year old that they are related to.

That's because teaching is their job. Avoiding everyone else outside of their job is a prudent step.

* You can sit in a park, but not tomorrow or Tuesday but by Wednesday that’ll be fine.

There had to be a starting point and the Government is giving fair notice.

This is because of the R number. If you meet one person instead of two whilst being contagious you will only infect one instead of both.

* You can work all day with your colleagues but you can’t sit in their garden for a chat after work.

Whilst in work you must adhere to Government guidelines such as social distancing and wearing PPE. If you went to their private home then the Government would have to legislate that you wear PPE and self distance which would be a very unpopular measure and the compliance would be negligible leading to an increase in infection.

* You can now do unlimited exercise when quite frankly just doing an hour a day feels like you are some kind of fitness guru. I can think of lots of things that I would like to be unlimited but exercise definitely isn’t one of them.

That is you but the Government has to think of others.

* You can drive to other destinations although which destinations is unclear.

You can drive to work, the supermarket or an open space for exercise.

* The buses are still running past your house but you shouldn’t get on one. We should just let empty buses drive around so bus drivers aren’t doing nothing.

The guidelines are that public transport should only be used by those going work and have no other means of getting there.

* It will soon be time to quarantine people coming into the country by air... but not yet. It’s too soon. And not ever if you’re coming from France because... well, I don’t know why, actually. Because the French version of coronavirus wouldn’t come to the UK maybe.

We should have been testing and quarantining arrivals from abroad a lot sooner. The reason why those from France and Ireland are not being quarantined is because their reproduction rate (the famous R) is similar to ours and it wouldn't make much difference if we did quarantine them or not.

* Our youngest children go back to school first because... they are notoriously good at not touching things they shouldn’t, maintain personal space at all times and never randomly lick you.

The children should be kept away from vulnerable people like their elderly grandparents (that's known as being alert). I would imagine that schools will have plenty of hand sanitiser and best hygiene practice will be encouraged by teachers.

* We are somewhere in between 3.5 and 4.5 on a five point scale where 5 is all of the virus and 1 is none of the virus but 2,3 and 4 can be anything you’d like it to be really. Some of the virus? A bit of the virus? Fully agree on the care homes the Government f**ked up big time.

* The slogan isn’t stay at home any more. So we don’t have to say at home. Except we do. Unless we can’t. In which case we should go out. But there will be fines if we break the rules. So don’t do that.

The slogan is to stay at home where you can but when you go out be alert, in other words use your common sense rather than try to confuse issues which doesn't help.

Don’t forget...

Stay alert... which Robert Jenrick has explained actually means Stay home as much as possible. Obviously.

Control the virus. Well, I can’t even control my dogs and I can actually see them. Plus I know a bit about dogs and very little about controlling viruses.

You are absolutely right, but it is true that more people are venturing out and i would hope they are being alert whist doing so.

The R at the moment in Wales is at 0.8,which means at that rate in the next 3 months a further 800 people would die of the virus,if the R raises to 1.1,in the same three month time scale, the amount that would die, would be 7,000 people
